The past continuous is defined as the tense that tells us about past situations in which their duration is relevant and they are not considered finished.
To talk about the past continuous, the verb to be was/were is used.
Were for plural

"Using While"This preposition of time means while, a sentence is always followed and indicates that the action takes place simultaneously with another within the same sentence. This means that two things happen in parallel.
"Using When"When is used to indicate short actions that fall in the middle of a longer action.
