Introduction

You know it by different names: past continuous, or past progressive. In the end, it is one of the most important and used verb tenses in English. For this reason and in order to improve your verbal and written expression when using it, here you can find at what times you should use it, the affirmative, negative and interrogative structures, as well as examples.

Past Continuous

Past continuous in English is used for: Express actions or states that were taking place in the past when another action or state interrupts or reinforces it. Offer context, that is, give information about facts or situations at a specific time. Mention two or more past actions that happened at the same time.

Structure

Mode Structure Affirmative Subject+ auxiliary verb (to be) + verb in ING (ing) + complement Negative Subject+ auxiliary verb (to be) + not + verb in ING (ing) + complement Interrogative Auxiliary verb (to be) + subject+ verb in ING (ing) + complement + ?

Examples Affirmative: Your dog was playing with its toys when I arrived Negative: I was not studying Physics at that time. Interrogative: Were you eating candies when I entered the room?
