In the Know: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Gastrointestinal endoscopy includes procedures for the upper GI tract, the esophagus, stomach, duodenum and bile duct, and the lower GI tract, the small and large intestines comprised of the colon, sigmoid, rectum and anus.
Early diagnosis of colorectal cancer significantly improves survival rate. With the encouraging positive outcomes from scope procedures combined with reinforcing, awareness campaigns, and new screening recommendation to start at age 45 versus 50 from previous advice, colonoscopy procedures will continue to grow. Sg2 insights predicts a three-year increase of 7.8% of colonoscopy procedures in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting.
Globally in 2020, colon cancer was the third most diagnosed cancer representing 10% of the new cases reported and is the second leading cause of death by cancer represented as 9.4% of the estimated deaths annually worldwide.
