1948 DP Act

Person who "forcibly removed or forced to fled" from his country of residence because o f persecution or fear of persecution, who entered Germany, Austria,or Italy between Sept. 1 , 1939 and Jan. 1 , 1949; or a resident of Germeny or Austria who was a victim of persecution by the Nazi government.

Definition of "Displaced Persons"

Person who is now under the care of IRO and entered Germany or Austria or Italy, on or before Dec. 22, 1945

Person who is now under the care of IRO entered Germany or Austria or Italy, on or before Jan. 1, 1949

Total of 205,00 in the course of 2 years. Ends in July 1950.

Number of DPs allowed to enter and timeline

Number to be admitted to 320,000.

Total of 339,000 in 3 years.

Total of 205,00 in the course of 2 years. Ends in July 1950.

Required detailed investigation and written reports, regarding his character, history and eligibility made by the DP Commission.

Adds new screening provision to DPs who have participated in the movements hostil to the U.S. during the war, or who have persecuted others due to religious or racial reasons.

Futher extended the screening to bar "Marxists" or "any person who have borne arms against the U.S." *declared that the Baltic SS. Waffen should not be prevented by Sec. 13

Significance

Thisdefinition is sufficiently broad to include not only DPs but also the 8 million expelles now in Germany, persons of German ancestry who were sent backinto Germany under the terms o fthe Potsdam agreement.
