Lawrence Kohlberg

• Kohlberg introduced a new theory of moral development that prized rational thinking and autonomous judgment as the source of moral behavior
• Kohlberg saw no need for textbooks with morally uplifting stories, and replaced them with values clarification and self­esteem lessons.
• Philosophy aligned with civil Libertarians

Character.org

• Character.org is widely known for its 11 Principles Framework for Schools: A Guide to Cultivating a Culture of Character, a comprehensive framework developed by school leaders and character education researchers.
• Character.org provides the voice, visibility, and resources across five priority areas: Parents & Families, Schools & Education, Sports & After-School Programs, Character in the Workplace, and International.

Dr. Gordon Vessels

• Dr. Vessels created a developmentally appropriate core curriculum for CE in 1998, before currently, recognized standards emerged.
• Backed by theory-based research, he distinguished between social and personal integrity and integrated seven primary virtues targeting important SEL and CE outcomes.

CASEL Founded

• Many researchers came together to develop CASEL.
• The goal is to establish high-quality, evidence-based SEL as an essential part of preschool through high school education.
• By 1997 SEL was formally defined.

• “Comer Model” or “Comer Process” is foundational to current SEL frameworks
• , Comer schools emphasized Black sociality as a way of achieving academic success and insisted that positive school-level social relations resulted in educative student experiences
• Comer's School Development Program is the foundation of SEL

• John Dewey expanded their goals to include critical thinking and reflection about values and morals.
• Dewey’s influence on education was evident in his theory about social learning; he believed that school should be representative of a social environment and that students learn best when in natural social settings.
