Present Perfect
Leonor Adelina Gamboa Segundo
English Basics
Present Perfect: uses
- an action or situation that began sometime in the past and continues into the present time.
- an action performed during a period that has not yet completed.
- a repeated activity in an unspecified time period between the past and the current time period.
- an action that finished in the very recent past, expressed by ‘just’.
- an action when the time is not important.
Leonor Adelina Gamboa Segundo
English Basics
Present Perfect: uses
Simple Past- Used with adverbs that describe a time already past (e.g. I studied for the test on Sunday).
- Used with an adverb that marks a specific point in time (e.g. I have studied today).
Present Perfect- Used with adverbs describing a time that started in the past and continues right up to the present time (e.g. I have studied every day this week).
- Used with an adverb that marks a specific point in time (e.g. I have studied today).
- Used when speaking about an event that happened in the recent past (e.g. I have studied night after night for this test).

Present Perfect: uses
- Completed action before something else in the past
- The past perfect tense is often used to describe something that occurred before another event in the past. We can also use it for actions that happened before a specific point in time in the past.
- Duration of the event in the past
Leonor Adelina Gamboa Segundo
English Basics
Present Perfect: uses
Notice: When you are talking about some event that happened before some other event in the past, you will use the past perfect tense. That‘s because the past perfect allows you to describe a specific time in the past, whereas the past simple doesn’t. With the past perfect you can convey the sequences of events – everything will be clearer and more specific. If we use the past perfect tense, we talk about one single event that happened in the past. I found out that he had used the washable paint only once, only in this particular instance. Since it is clear that we are talking about a specific instance of using the paint, we use the past perfect tense.
