Access code to the cement manufacturing plant: 371

Meeting with Dr. Narumi at 11:00 AM
Dear Lucía, It is my pleasure to inform you that your internship application for a placement at the cement manufacturing plant has been successful. We want to give you a warm welcome to the team and we are looking forward to you starting to work on our CO2 capture and storage project. Dr. Narumi, who has extensive experience in computer science and chemical process modelling, will be your internship supervisor. He has requested to have a videocall with you before your first day working with us. Sincerely, María Hernández Cortés Manufacturing Plant Director
Reunión con el Dr. Narumi hoy a las 11:00h.

Hey! Welcome to the cement manufacturing plant. María, the manufacturing plant director, is waiting for you. She’s in the control room. You’ll know when you see it because it is blue and green.

SALA DE CONTROL

The control room is in this building. Shall we go in?
Don't be put off by so many computers, except for Dr. Narumi's, we'll take care of the rest.
This computer is encrypted... Is it Dr. Narumi’s?

Hey! I’m María, the manufacturing plant director. I know that Dr. Narumi has given you a series of challenges to crack the code so you access the information on his computer. As today is your first day, you should learn about the cement manufacturing process and our contribution to the circular economy. You’ve got more information on the computer on the right-hand side.
Turn on the sound!
You must go the following places in the order they appear:
  • Raw materials deposit.
  • Storage of alternative fuels.
  • Rotary kiln.
  • Quality control laboratory.
Find the secret words in each place, you will need them.
Before continuing, it would be interesting to visit the raw materials deposit.
This panel seems to want to tell us something...

RAW MATERIAL SILO

We keep raw materials for manufacturing the cement here. Some of them are waste that we use for our manufacturing process. Point them out!

To make cement, we first must get, prepare and grind the raw materials (limestone, marl, clay, slate, etc.). Some mineral wastes generated in other industries (construction and demolition waste, iron scrap, paper mill sludge, foundry sand, etc.) have a similar composition to the raw materials from which cement is made and can replace natural raw materials.

Find the key word and make a note of it somewhere, you’ll need it later.

Great, you’ve got the first word. Move on to look for the second one.

YES

Sure that you’ve found the first key word?
You have already visited the raw materials silo.
Before visiting the kiln... Shouldn’t you look for the alternative fuels deposit?

ALTERNATIVE FUELS DEPOSIT

With this crane we supply combustibles alternativos to the rotary kiln, where the raw materials are fired to get clinker, an intermediary producto of cement. Alternative fuels provide an energy source to run the kiln. Instead of using non-renewable fossil fuels, such as coal, we can use fuels derived from...

In 2021, the cement sector avoided emitting 1,087,541 tonnes of CO2, thanks to the use of alternative fuels, equivalent to the emissions produced by 304,699 petrol cars.

Furthermore, thanks to the material and energy recovery of waste:
  • We reduced the amount of waste destined for landfill.
  • We saved energy.
  • We reduced air and water contamination.
  • We protected natural resources.
  • We created new jobs.

Great, you’ve got the second word. Move on to look for the third one.

Remember that you have already been in the alternative fuels deposit.
Not so quick.... This kiln looks interesting....

ROTARY KILN

From here we control the kiln’s operation. Climate change is a huge problem we face as a society. Everyone, companies and institutions must take action to reduce our carbon footprint. If you want to see the inside of the kiln, you can look through the control peephole, but you must unlock the security system beforehand by showing your commitment to the fight against climate change.

The inside of the kiln must reach a temperature of 1500ºC to make clinker. Reaching these temperatures requires a lot of energy, but we have the target of being carbon neutral before 2050.

You've already been to the rotary kiln!

Dear Lucía, First of all, おめでとうございます "omedetou gozaimasu" , which means CONGRATULATIONS in Japanese. If you are reading this message, it is because you have demonstrated the necessary skills to decipher all the clues and enigmas that I have proposed to you. I'm sure you've had some good help, and together you've shown that you have the skills to deal with any problem. We can say that climate change is the big problem we all must face, not tomorrow, but today. We must be aware and be prepared to act and implement all measures necessary to stop global warming.

I am leaving my home country of Japan today to start working with you on creating this bright future. In the meantime, I am sending you a picture of my great achievement these days: becoming a master of the noble martial art of aikido, which translates as "the way", as the path we are going to walk together. Greetings Dr. Narumi
