Mitigating Climate Change

How Climate Change Has Impacted France

  • France has decreased the amount of energy that they are getting from coal, so that only a few percent of their total energy is from coal.
  • Much of their current energy is produced from nuclear power plants, however they aim to decrease the amount of these as well.
  • A law has been passed which prohibits people from traveling short distances via airplane if the distance could be covered by train in a few hours.
  • France currently gets 10% of their power from renuable energy sources, but they aim to get this amount to over 30 percent by 2030.
  • The primary way that France has been impacted by Climate change is increasing temperatures, which are increasing at a faster rate than the global average. This has affected France in many ways including:
    • Posing a risk to human health with thousands having died in the past due to extreme heat waves.
    • Decreasing precipitation in some regions as well as increasing evaporation from forests, rivers, and groundwater which poses challenges to both humans and habitats.
    • Increasing the cost of agriculture by requiring more irrigation to fields.
    • Causing more flooding in mountainous regions due to the melting of glaciers.
  • In the future rising sea levels will cause greater coastal flooding as well as take away land.
  • France is one of the greatest producers of molluscs, and this industry will be damaged as ocean acidification makes it harder for these types of creatures to build their shells.
Similar Impacts Elsewhere
  • The countries near France such as Belgium and the Netherlands are also experiencing high temperatures due to global warming.
  • The Artic is the region expriencing the greatest rate of global warming. This effects other areas globally as melting ice raises global sea levels.
  • Countries surrounding impacted countries are affected as impacted countries require more imports. For example it becomes more costly to maintain certain plants in high temperatures and therfore more cost efficient to import them.
