1. Mirror neurons: What is its importance in education?

From the discovery of mirror neurons in our brain, it is possible to understand that there are educational implications for optimizing children's development by using scientific evidence to understand more about how our brain works and taking advantage of human biology to stimulate its maximun potential.

MIRROR NEURONS PHYSIOLOGY

(Ferrari & Rissolatti, 2015)

MIRROR NEURONS PHYSIOLOGY

  • Monkey experiments confirm the existence of an area in the brain that provides neuronal bases for observational learning.
  • PET scans reveal the same thing about humans.

(Lacoboni & Dapretto, 2006)

relationship between mirror neurons and learning

Mirror neurons prompt the child to move and as a consequence, learning opportunities are increased.

Mirror neurons facilitate representation in the brain, thereby activating the cognitive process of imitation.

Imitation is a fundamental skill for varioous procedural learning such as linguistic, motor and socio-emotional.

Mirror mechanism helps children learn by observation how to adapt ther body and behaviour in order to interact with others.

(Burgos Zambrano & Cabrera Ávila, 2021)

Educational theories and mirror neurons

Lev Vygotsky and socio-cultural Theory

Bandura’s Social Learning Theory

Cooperative Laearning

Any learning approach that overcomes individualism and competitiveness so that culture and behaviors are transmitted through interaction.

Emphasizes the role of observational learning, cognitive processes and social experiences in determining behavior.

The cognitive development of the child depends on the socio-cultural environment where the guidance of a MKO allows him to scaffold the process towards the construction of higher skills.

(Crain, 2014)

(Burgos Zambrano & Cabrera Ávila, 2021)

(Bukatko & Daehler, 2004)

The multiple studies carried out on mirror neurons indicate their broad relationship with topics such as social and non-social cognition, language, perception, motor action and emotion, with which scientific knowdledge acquire relevance in the approach to various developmental disorders in children.

(Bonini, Rotunno, Acuri, & Gallese, 2022)

CONCLUSIONS

Mirror neurons are closely related to the development of the human being, since they are a mechanism that allows the individual to know and interact in the world around him thanks to the ability of imitation. Imitation occurs after a complex brain process that begins with observation, goes through representation, and manifests itself in thoughts, emotions, values, and attitudes.
