Learning Games for Kids
Rationale:
- OLS 2.MD.8 Solve problems with money. a. Identify nickels and quarters by name and value. b. Find the value of a collection of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. c. Solve word problems by adding and subtracting within 100, dollars with dollars and cents with cents (not using dollars and cents simultaneously) using the $ and ₵ symbols appropriately (not including decimal notation).
- ISTE 1.1a which states, “Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes
Learning Games for Kids Activity
- Have students choose a 2nd grade math money game on the website or you can assign one to them through Google Classroom.
- Hand out a piece of paper to each student and have them write one goal down for their skills with money that they want to improve on. They will focus on this goal for the next few days.
- During small group rotation time, students will spend time practicing their goals and money skills during that specific rotation time.
- When students are working with the teacher during their small group time, they will check in on their goals with the teacher and discuss any new strategies they have learned from their games and lessons about money.
- Students and teachers will continue to check with each other on learning goals and help ensure students meet them through practicing with Learning Games for Kids and working in small and whole groups for lessons. Through all of this, students should be able to learn more about specific skills within money.
Digitial Escape Room
Introduction
- This can be done through many different forms. In this case it is done through Google Forms. This is an assessment tool.
- Students work to complete the problems and challenges to show their knowledge.
- Teachers are able to view student work and responses to see what they understand and what needs reviewed.
Learning Outcome:
Students will be able to use the digital escape room to complete the challenge with at least 3 out of 4 correct answers given. Students will be able to receive feedback from the teacher on at least one challenge question.
Digitial Escape Room
Rationale:
- OLS 2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
- OLS 2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. See standard 1.OA.6 for a list of mental strategies.
- ISTE 1.1 Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
Escape Room Activity
- Teachers need to assign the Google form link to their students. This can be done through Google Classroom by creating an assignment with the class and posting the link.
- Students will go onto Google Classroom by clicking on the Google Form link. Once they are in, they will follow the directions on the Google Form to "find the treasure ".
- Students should get out a piece of paper to work out the problems on and show their work.
- Students need to work together or individually to solve all of the tasks and show what they know in this escape room to find the treasure.
- Once students complete all 4 tasks, they should submit their answers to allow the teacher to see who got what correct and what needs to be reviewed.
- Once the whole class is done, the teacher can review the answers whole group with the class.
