Definition

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if ) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if ) is fulfilled. They usually express a situation that can be POSSIBLE, IMPROBABLE or IMPOSSIBLE to happen. These clauses are divided in two parts: CONDITION------------------------------RESULT OF THAT CONDITION If I finish soon , I'll call you There are three / four types of Conditional Sentences.

REAL CONDITIONS

ZERO CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are generally true, especially for laws and rules. Ex: If I drink too much coffee, I can't sleep at night. Ice melts if you heat it. When the sun goes down, it gets dark. The structure is: if/when + present simple >> present simple.

POSSIBLE CONDITIONS

FIRST CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations we believe are real or possible.

Ex: If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.

In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually: if/when + present simple >> will + infinitive. It is also common to use this structure with unless, as long as, as soon as or in case instead of if.

Ex: I'll leave as soon as the babysitter arrives. I don't want to stay in London unless I get a well-paid job.

IMPROBABLE CONDITIONS

SECOND CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

The second conditional is used to imagine present or future situations that are unlikely in reality.

Ex: If we had a garden, we could have a cat. If I won a lot of money, I'd buy a big house in the country. I wouldn't worry if I were you.

The structure is usually: if + past simple >> + would + infinitive. When if is followed by the verb be, it is grammatically correct to say if I were, if he were, if she were and if it were. However, it is also common to hear these structures with was, especially in the he/she form. Ex: If I were you, I wouldn't mention it. If she was prime minister, she would invest more money in schools. He would travel more if he was younger.

IMPOSSIBLE CONDITIONS

THIRD CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

The third conditional is used to imagine a different past. We imagine a change in a past situation and the different result of that change.

Ex: If I had understood the instructions properly, I would have passed the exam. We wouldn't have got lost if my phone hadn't run out of battery. In third conditional sentences, the structure is usually: If + past perfect >> would have + past participle.

OTHER ALTERNATIVES TO IF

PROVIDED THAT / PROVIDING ( THAT ) / AS LONG AS Ex: You can go with us, provided that / as long as you pay for your own meals.

IMAGINE/SUPPOSE/SUPPOSING in questions

Ex: Imagine/Suppose /Supposing someone published a private email from you opn Facebook, would you be angry?

IN CASE / IN CASE OF ( as a precaution )

Ex: I'll give you my mobile phone in case of an emergency. Take some cash in case they don't accept credit cards.

INVERSION

There are some cases in which we use inversion, mostly in writing to emphasize the rethorical effect of the sentence.

1. With the auxiliary verbs WERE and HAD. The verb WERE is also used with the first and third person singular. Ex: If it were my photograph, I wouldn't let anyone publish it. Were it my photograph , I would not let anyone publish it. 2. With SHOULD if we want to say that the condition is rather improbable. Ex: If you should be dissatisfied with the product, you are entitled to a refund. Should you be dissatisfied with the product , you are entitled to a refund. 3. When using INVERSION we do not use CONTRACTIONS with negatives in dependent clauses. Ex: If I hadn't told the police the truth, an innocent person would have been arrested. // Had I not told the police the truth...

MIXED CONDITIONALS

You used MIXED CONDITIONAL to describe certain IMAGINARY situations and their IMAGINARY results. There are TWO main types: 1. If + Past Simple , would/wouldn't have + Past Participle Ex: If he was less famous, he would have gone out dancing with his friends more. 2. If + Past Perfect , would/wouldn't + verb Ex: If he hadn't played the part of Harry Potter, he wouldn't be one of the richest young stars in cinema today.

IF ONLY and I WISH

IF ONLY / I WISH We can use IF ONLY to say that we would like things to be different. It means the same as I WISH..., but is more emphatic. The clause with IF ONLY often stands alone , without a main clause.We use the same tenses after IF ONLY... and after I WISH. 1. PAST TO TALK ABOUT THE PRESENT Ex: If only I knew more people! / If only I was better-looking! We can use were instead of was. It is considered more correct in a formal style. 2. WOULD +INFINITIVE TO REFER TO THE FUTURE Ex: If only it would stop raining, we could go out. 3. PAST PERFECT TO REFER TO THE PAST Ex: If only she hadn't told the police , everything would have been all right.
