Nine elemeents of project based learning
This is a second grade class consisting of 22 students. This is a math lesson.
ISTE & State Standards
ISTE: 1.7 Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally. State Standard 2.NBT.3 Read and write numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded forms.
Technology and materials used by teacher and students:
Students:online place value manipulative Place value sliders-hands on manilultive Colored Pencils/crayons/markers. teacher made assessment some sort of tablet or computer to access the online manipulative Teachers: Smart board to display online manipulative Enlarged place value sliders to model A Piece of paper with your questions for assessment written out
Anchorintroduce place value and the importance by saying you went to buy a grill for $500. You checked your bank account and misread it to say you have $600 in the account. You go to check out and your card declines, so you check your bank account app again and notice that you added another 0, when you actully only had $60.TaskBy the end of class today, you will be able to write numbers in the thousands place and correctly tell me which place each number is in. For example: if I give you the number 1586, you will be able to tell me which place the six, the eight, the five and the one are in.
Nine Elements of Project Based Learning
When you finish, I want you to trace the numbers in the one's place in red, the number in the ten's place in blue, the number in the hundred's place in green, and the number in the thousand's place in black. Do that for all ten of the numbers I call out and then turn it in. Remember to put commas inthe correct places. If you finish early, you can keep playing with the manipulatives, try to come up with bigger numbers and practice saying them with a partner, or read. At the end of class you can share some of the numbers you came up with or how you did on your assessment if you owuld like to.
- Directions- I want each of you to get your iPad quickly and quietly. I have sent you a link and I want you to open it and wait until everyone has gotten to that point. I will have the same website displayed on the smart board. Okay, now that we are all there, I am going to play around with this virual manipulative to show you how it works and explain it to you. Then you will explore it on your own for ten minutes. After that, I will give you a hand on place value slider manipulative. I will call out numbers and you will slide them like so (demonstrats a number in the 1,000's place), and then you will read the number back to me as a class. We will do this for 15-20 minutes. After that, I will hand you a worksheet to be completed in pairs. The worksheet will be numbered from 1-10 and I will call out numbers for you to write down and you will write those numbers.
Student Choices
- Students can choose to use colord pencils, crayons, or markers. Then can also choose thier partner pair if they make a good choice and don't take too long to choose.
Student Inquiry
- Student inquiry is used by allowing students to freely explore the online manipulative. This way, they are adding blocks into each place value and seeing for themselves that three tens and six ones is 36. The number they make will also be displayed under the manipulative so they see what the number is.
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Students will work as a whole class while using the hands on manipulatives and in pairs during the assessment.
Teacher coaching and feedback
- The teacher can coach and give feedback while working with the hands on manipulatives. The assessment to be done at the end is to see what students learned from the lesson

Student Reflection
- I will give students feedback on their assessment before they leave for the day. I will also tell them to let their partner know one thing they liked about working with their partner and one thing they think their partner can improve on.
Public Presentation
- At the end of class, students can share one of the numbers they made up, or how they did on the assessment if they choose to.
Each question is worth ten points. Five points for correct written number and five points for correctly color coding place value. 5pts for correct number written + 5pts correctly color coding place value = 10pts--one question correct. Possible grade of 100
