Teacher Introduction Video

If your school chooses to participate in the screener, you'll send this video to your teachers, which explains in a nutshell how to do the screener.

How do I analyze the data?

The data is used for different purposes depending on what screener window we are in.

How do I analyze the data?

For individual students, we must always use multiple sources of data when deciding if an intervention is needed, and which one

How do I analyze the data?

The data is loaded directly into the SIMS Early Warning System, and can be analyzed more deeply with Advanced Reporting in SIMS Click the image for a demo video!

How do I assign student interventions?

Sort students based on need and risk level

Using multiple sources of data, for example:- attendance - discipline referrals -suspensions -collaborative referrals - academic needs Sort students based on their risk level into Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3.

Who completes the behavior screener?

Parents/Caregivers Parents and caregivers opt into a behavior screener

Students Each student takes a 5 minute quiz

Classroom teachers One teacher does the screener for the whole classroom

Right answer!

Teachers complete the screener for their classroom. Only one teacher should rate each student. The screener takes less than 1 minute per student

How often do we complete the behavior screener

Whenever we feel its needed Students may be at risk at any time, so we can complete the screener whenever we need to.

Three times a year During the fall, winter, and spring windows

Once a year Only screen once at the beginning of the year

Right answer!

Its important to screen AT LEAST twice a year, but we can screen up to three times a year, and only during the screening windows

A student would be appropriate for a Tier 3 intervention if...

We feel it is necessary

They are high risk on the screener, but everything else is fine

They are high risk on the screener and have at least one other risk factor, like a suspension

Right answer!

We should always use multiple sources of data to determine whether a student needs additional intervention.

How do we protect students against implicit bias in the screener

There's no need This screener is immune to implicit bias

Multiple sources of data Triangulating data helps protect against implicit bias

We can't There is nothing we can do about implicit bias

Right answer!

continuE >

Using multiple sources of data and investigating whether the challenge is a Tier 1 issue, and adult-centered issue, or a student challenge are some ways to protect students from implicit bias

Great job!

Let's keep learning together.

Why do we screen

  • We must cast a wider 'net' to ensure fewer students fall through the cracks in our system
  • Universal screeners level the playing field, and provide a data driven source of information on students risk levels for continued behavioral challenges
for behavioral concerns?

Ensures all students have equal access to additional supports and interventions Untreated behavioral concerns have the potential to create barriers to learning (Adelman & Taylor, 2002) Without early intervention, students who regularly engage in aggressive actions are likely to develop more serious patterns of behavior that are resistant to intervention (Walker, Ramsey, & Gresham, 2004)

What are screeners?

A key part of MTSS for academics and behavior

Universal screeners for academic skills are required by state law and by district policy. This means we quickly evaluate every student's academic skills and then provided tiered interventions based on the students' needs. Behavior screeners work the same way, but are currently optional .

  • Screeners are quick measures of academic or behavioral skill
  • Universal screeners assess every student
  • The follow up to a screener must always involve other sources of data and intervention for students at risk

MTSS Sharepoint - Screening Information

When does screening occur?

Three times a year

There is a fall, winter, and spring screening window Fall - last 2 weeks of September Winter - December before winter break Spring - entire month of April Each 'window' gives us slightly different data to work with. Its important to screen at least twice a year, in Fall and Spring. The winter screening is considered optional, but can be very helpful to schools.
