Education for sustainable development (ESD) promotes the development of the knowledge, skills, understanding, values and actions required to create a sustainable world, which ensures environmental protection and conservation, promotes social equity and encourages economic sustainability. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide worldwide guidance for addressing the global challenges facing the international community. It is about better protecting the natural foundations of life and our planet everywhere and for everyone, and preserving people's opportunities to live in dignity and prosperity across generations. SDGs were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.With this project we try our best to support this agenda and approach sustainable development holistically in European Primary School through cultivating SEL and by implementing mindful acivities in order to better involve students and give them the tools to understand and work towards the SDGs.

Morse Code - global goals

During this activity for CodeWeek 2022, students learned to create secret messages using Morse code. Students tried to write with Morse Code the global goals. The algorithm is very simple. Every character in the English language was substituted by a series of ‘dots’ and ‘dashes’. By learning how to create and send secret Morse code messages students had a basic understanding of what the Morse code is and the way it was used in the Second World War. They discovered the Morse code alphabet in a fun and entertaining way, and had fun coding. In addition, they created the Morse code sounds for each global goal. In the following interactive application you can hear children's morse code by simply scanning the qr code:

Students from 7th Primary School of Thebes read the story of the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, fighting for the right of girls to attend school despite violent attacks.

reading Malala's story

Malala's story was not only instructive but also inspiring. Students made comments on how brave she had been and how inspiring she was to each of them. Malala inspires because she does not give up. Not when the Taliban take over her village. Not when they threaten her. Not when they attack her! She writes her story. She speaks internationally. She demonstrates that one young person with unending persistence can truly change in the world!

The challenge for the etwinners is based on the fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk”.In this engineering challenge, students constructed a parachute to help Jack escape the giant using everyday household and classroom items to complete this project. This activity was fun and educational. It encourages critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills, as well as, problem solving and teamwork.

My Little Book of BIG Freedoms is a beautiful, inspiring book for everyone, young and old. It explains Human Rights in an immensely child-friendly way without over-simplifying them and taking away their value. The book has been illustrated by awarding winning writer and illustrator and former Children's Laureate, Chris Riddell. It has been published by Buster Books in partnership with Amnesty International UK, the world's largest human rights organisation. Each double page spread contains a freedom and an illustration to represent it. My students from 7th Primary School of Thebes, Greece were fascinated by it. It is stunning. It is important. It should be in every school!
