TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE
To use a triple beam balance, place an object on the pan and adjust the counterweights until the pointer is balanced at the zero line. Then determine the mass by looking at the position of each counterweight. Add the masses given by each counterweight to find the total mass of the object.
GRADUATED CYLINDER
Place the graduated cylinder on a flat surface and view the height of the liquid in the cylinder with your eyes directly level with the liquid. The liquid will tend to curve downward. This curve is called the meniscus. Always read the measurement at the bottom of the meniscus.
RULER - METER STICK
Reading a meter stick works just like reading an extra-large ruler. Decide which unit of measure you want to read the measurements in. Then, line that side of the meter stick up with whatever you're measuring. Once that's done, shift the meter stick as needed so that the "zero" mark on the meter stick lines up with the point where you want the measurement to start. Finally, read the numbers along the meter stick until you reach the far edge of whatever you're measuring. Whatever number on the meter stick that edge lines up with is your measurement.
INFRARED
THERMOMETER
Look for the numbers and measuring scale of black lines. These vertical (up and down) lines stand for degrees of temperature. Most thermometers have two scales for temperature, Fahrenheit and Celsius. Read the numbers for °C (degrees of Celsius). Each long line is for 1°F temperature. The four shorter lines between each long line are for 0.2°F (two tenths) of a degree of temperature. Look for the line of fluid running along between the numbers and the vertical black lines. Read the number that is closest to where the column of fluid ends.
BEAKER
Like the graduated cylinder view the height of the liquid in the beaker with your eyes directly level with the liquid. The liquid will tend to curve downward. Always read the measurement at the bottom of the meniscus.
DIGITAL SCALE
Turn the scale on using the power button, then set your scale to the unit of measurement you require. For (ounces = oz, grams = g) using the "mode" button or "unit" button. Press the button until the display reads the correct measurement. Place your chosen container on top of the scale. You will see that the scale will register and display the weight of the bowl. Press the "zero" button or "tare" button to remove the weight of the container and bring the display back to zero. Add your substance according to the instructions. Once your display reads the correct amount, stop. If you add too much, take a little out. So easy.
STOPWATCH
Reading a stopwatch is relatively easy. Most stopwatches have start, stop, and reset buttons located on the top or side. Generally, the start/stop button is located at the top and the reset button is located on the side. To use the stopwatch, depress the start/stop button. This will begin timing your event. When the event is complete, depress the start/stop button again to stop the timings. To reset the stopwatch to zero, depress the reset button. Some digital models can measure elapsed time to the centisecond (1/100 of a second).
ERLENMEYER FLASK
Like the graduated cylinder view the height of the liquid in the beaker with your eyes directly level with the liquid. The liquid will tend to curve downward. Always read the measurement at the bottom of the meniscus.
10M WINDUP TAPE
Perfect for long distance measuring, this double-sided tape measure can measure up to 10 metres/33 feet. Marked in centimetres and millimetres on one side and inches on the reverse. Winds back into sturdy case (90 mm diameter)
MICROSCOPE
A microscope is an instrument that can be used to observe small objects, even cells. The image of an object is magnified through at least one lens in the microscope. This lens bends light toward the eye and makes an object appear larger than it actually is.
FUNNEL
With the non-dominant hand, pick and put the funnel inside the bottle keeping the spout down. Move the left thumb and index finger of the non-dominant hand, so that you hold the top of the funnel inside the neck of the bottle. Hold the jug with the dominant hand and start pouring water inside the funnel.
TEST TUBES
There are several material types of test tubes: glass, plastic, metal and ceramic. Glass and plastic are the most common while metal and ceramic are less common. There are several sub-types of glass and plastic test tubes. Chemists use test tubes to mix, heat and/or hold small quantities of chemicals for laboratory experiments. Biologists use them to culture and handle various organisms, fluids, and samples.
