Ireland before 1800

19th Century: The Act of Union

19th Century: The Irish Potato Famine

From 1845 to 1849, the potato crop was affected by a blight (a disease) which resulted in the Great Hunger or the Great Famine. About one million people died from starvation or famine-related diseases. The British government was slow to provide aid and allowed landlords to continue exporting grain.

19th Century: Immigration

Up to two million people were forced to emigrate to Great Britain and especially to the USA. Emigration continued for decades. By 1921, the population was 4 million. In 1960, it was down to 3 million.

20th Century: Rebellion

Irish demands for independence had been growing through the 19th century. Two Home Rule bills, which would allow self-government of domestic affairs, failed in 1886 and 1893. ln 1914, a third bill passed but was not put into effect because of WW1. On Easter Monday, 1916, a small group of nationalists proclaimed a provisional Irish government and occupied government buildings. The Easter Rising only lasted a week, and its leaders were executed.
