Santa Catarina Lake

The CNA was really worried about the high possiblities the water of this lake could go abroad so they made a plan. 5 years forward the plan is now made by the government. So their plan was to take ot the grass, but they took the threes also. Here is a before and after this clearence:

As we can see this small clearence was actually bigger than expected, they got in with there trucks and actually took down threes for not reason at all. Did is how the government tells us they will do something and they do other things.

HOW CAN I BE A BETTER CONSUMER?

Do not rely on labels

Sometimes company use words like "eco-friendly", "clean" or "free of..." Look beyond that do not be okay by just reading this labels, because most of the time they do not mean anything or is not true at all. They may use vague or misleading labels to catch your attention into believing you are not doing any harm. Look for companies that have a history of transparency and a history of doing actual goods. If a company has bad reputation in this area the probability they changed in minimal.

Look into the whole picture

Great! This advertisment just came in my instagram! My favorite brand made a product that will be 100% recicled... Only 1 product? Buying that sustainable product from that bad company is still supporting the company! Look into their manufacturing process, how they manage it, shipping, energy consumption. Because that one product may be of paper, but at what cost? It's not always like this, if a company has concrete targets with dates ad how publicly it may be thrustworthy.

A Plus Verification

Look for products or companies that have been verified by a credible organizations. Organizations like USDA Organic, Energy Star or Fair trade, look for credible organization and see what they think of the company you want to purchase. Look for companies that asses or cerify environmental claims. Look for articles and their history to see if they are actually reliable.

You are being ignorant...

  • "I use paper straws"
  • "I take showers of 10 min"
  • "I went last saturday to help clean garbage"
  • "They say climate change is not real"
  • "I heard that there are studies that shows climate change have been here forever"
  • "Some contries are actually getting colder"

Believeing this is minimal - IS NOT ENOUGH Doing this actions is minimal - IS NOT ENOUGH People lie about climate change and sometimes makes us believe things that may be out of context or not true at all. Cherry picking is usually when they just tell us some sort of information and hides the other part. People know there is climate change we can see it on the rising of our degrees. And hearing people saying this lies is only a comfort to you and themselves. Its time to STOP BEING IGNORANT and inform ourselves.

How to be a good citizen

Be informed. Voting may seem like something not that important, but have in mind millions of life are in their hands. Also see if the candidates are in any way talking about the environment. And not only talking a plan with goals and how will they accomplish that. Do not be scare to speak up! People sometimes don't know the power they hold. The government have that power because us as citizens gave them that. Right now with social media is easier to make more movements and make viral some issues you do not agree on. Participate in their process. I am not only about voting for the governor o president, vote in those small news that not everyone votes. Investigate what is the voting for and see what is the best option. This small decision the government makes is what makes big changes. Also be updated with the CNA, semanart to see what is the best option environmentally.

Have you been falling in this fallacies? Let's stop that and make our planet happy

Watch

BUT, HOw?

  • STAY INFORMED: seeking information is one of the best way to save our planet. Seeing a social media page and investigating if all of what is said is true will keep you interesting. Not believing everything you see and actually looking for facts will be a huge step. If you hear someone saying something you do not know is true do not be scare to look it up.
  • STAND UP: Challenge people to also get informed. Speak up if you hear something is not true or cherry picking. Do not be scare of writing in the internet or saying it in person, people will back you up. Having constructive dialogue will make them be more aware themselves.
  • MAKE GOALS: The words "I will" are sometimes not the best for this type of change. Setting goals with specific dates and measures will give you better control on yourself. Instead of just saying I will use less my car. Set a goal like "I will use my car this month less that (whichever number) kilometers. This is a more concrete way you could get to your goals.

Ethos, Pathos and logos

Let's take as an example Zara's campaign JOIN LIFE. They use all of this 3 persuasive methods to make us believe they are doing something for the environmen. "100% LINO MÁS SOSTENIBLE Y POLIÉSTER RECICLADO O MÁS SOSTENIBLE" In this example we can see how they are using logos to pesuade us. They are using the 100% and it makes sense. But let's analyze it closely "Recycled or more sustainable", so we see an or whitch means its either one or the other. Then we see more sustainable, that doesn't mean is sustainable it just means is lees bad. "Firmamos un Acuerdo Marco Global con IndustriALL Global Union, federación sindical internacional, para fortalecer los derechos laborales de los trabajadores de nuestra cadena de suministro." This is how Zara makes us believe there are actually caring and making action, which they are using Ethos. IndustriALL is just plans of actions, by signing this agreement Zara is not being forced to do anything. For the Pathos one here is a video that Zara puts over their JOIN LIFE section. It makes you emotional and how they are talking it goes for our feelings

"I will change my marnufacturing process, is cheaper!"

"Ahh I just changed to this new material, game changer I make more money!"

Being ignorant about your material and you process is not okay. When working, the environment needs to be acknowledge in every type of change. If you don't know the effects the new shipping, material or the manufacturing problems you should not be changing. This is such a big problem with brands and companies because climate change is not discussed when making this big decissions. You never know that damage your making by only changing that small detail.

You are a citizen

Being a citizen is not only going to vote depending on what candidate they recomend to you there's more than that. We are all included politically in our society. You may say "I am not into politics", well your boss is, your insurance company is, your landlord is, and most people who affect your life are. People that you trust are into politics. Some people are so comfortable because of their privilage so they say "I am not into politics", organizations and the government affects millions of life everyday. It's time to step up and get informed with your government because it is affecting you as well. You may ask what does being a citizen affect the environment? A lot. The government, private organizations and more have the power to be as sutainable as they want. And they don't want you to know that the citizens all together have power over them as well. Being more conscious is tehe first step to become a better citizen for the environment. In this manual you will be given examples of how the government or powerful organizations have been tricking you and how to avoid it.

No, but I work in real state that does not affect the environment!

It does...

Yes any type of job has its consequences to the envrionment. Maybe some other profesions more than others, but there is some damage done if we are not thinking about our actions. For this part of the manual I want you to think about your profession or your future profession and imagine all the things you are going to do. Now keep that thought for the rest of this manual.

Greenwashing

Refresing, right? It made me feel like if buying Fiji water was not bad for the environment at all. It made me feel like it's actually good for the environment. Did you felt that? Because that is what they are trying to do. This is called greenwashing. Greenwashing is when a company through marketing shows that they are environmentally conscious but isn't actually making significant efforts to do so. There are 9 types of greenwashing, in this example in particular is called green by association. According to Builidng Green, green by association means: "A company slathers itself and its marketing thoroughly in environmental terms and images so that even if its products have no environmental benefits, consumers associate them with positive environmental attributes. "

It was so easy for them to do that, right? Greenwashing is in so many forms. And while they could be telling you something true, they may be hiding something else. Further in the manual there will be tips on how not to fall for this.

Social media has become parts of our life. You probably have heard of this next phrares:

"That instragram page told me that if I posted a story they would help the turtles"

"But, I retweeted and signed that petition to build threes!"

Slactivism is promoting or sharing online content about the issues through any paltform of social media. Joining organization, signing petition, like, retweeting and more. This make people feel like they are doing something for the environment when they are not. Likes, retweets or answering a google docs is not enough! Make something! That like you made will not help growing threes, there needs to be a change. how to identify them and what to do? When you see that there is little to no effort in this kinds of movement is slacktivism. Step up, comment on that section that this is not a true way to help and they are just tricking us into believing it is.

THIS IS NOT ENOUGH IS SLACKTIVISM

What if you are the owner...

Imagine your sells are going down and your competition just posted on their social media that they are going green. You see their new materials and they are actually eco-friendly, so you look for alternatives to do the same and rise your sells. But seeing the cost of those materials is way out of your league, remember your sells are going down, so you li and say your products are also green. Believe it or not a lot of brands and companies straight up lie about if they are eco efficiant and make people believe that they are doing no harm to our planet. It is a type of greenwashing: Outright Lying. You see how this minor incovinence could lead to make greenwashing.

Why is being a consumer harming the environment?

So consuming itself its not bad, is over consumption that makes an effect in the environment. We all need to buy food, clothes, furniture to live. We need to be consumers to live, but there is a better way to do it for our planet. Consumption is bad for the environment, because of the production. It takes a lot to make a product and ship it to your house or local store. It makes CO2 emisions or produce greenhouse gases aswell. It also causes airpollution and is tiring our planet. So imagine no one in your household drinks milk, but you go buy some because you like cereal. You buy a big carton of milk because you believe you will finish it before the expiration date comes. You do not finish it, there is more than half being left, so you throw it away. This happens again and again and again. This is over consumption. You are buying this big product that took resources to make and not using it. What would be a smart choice in this escenary is to buy a smaller carton of milk that you will finish. This manual will help you be a better consumer, to make our planet happier.

Think about your hobbies, your goals, your sports, in other words what makes you YOU

Sometimes your hobby may be the leading cause of ignorance in the environment. You probably won't see it or you do not want to see it to continue your life as it is. But, it is not that difficult. The first thing to do is to realize that you are damaging the environment. We then also have the fallacies of believing things that are not true. But, climate change is real, and this is also your planet. Making some changes in your routine will not be the end of the world, but if we do not make them, it may be. We can't blame ourselves completely for not taking action on the environment. We sometimes fall into Greenwashing, fallacies, and slacktivism that we are not aware of.

Be honest

01

Not only with your clients and workers, but also with yourself. Be proud and make some good. Having an honest working environment will always be better than knowing you are making your employers lie. Or the other way around if you need to lie to work there maybe is nit the best option.

Think green

02

Always have the environment in the table. Have in mind making changes not only affects you and your company it affects all of us and you should be aware if that. If you are the employer, bring up ideas with good eco friendly materials or production. And being concrete is key, if you go and have a plan it is easier to be made.

Enjoy it

03

If its costing you more time or effort to use be more eco friendly, enjoy it. Now that this is your planet to and making the best of it is the minimal thing we can do for it.

Maya Train

President AMLO had this idea of Making a train called Maya. According to The Economista a voting was held, this train is going to pass through a lot of indigenous communities, so that means that a lot of cinstruction will be made in there home. Accoriding to this same article 92.3% voted to make this train and only 7.2% voted to not do it. There are a lot of theories of why these numbers if this train will only affect them. We know trains is one of the less contaminated form of transport, but what about the threes and all of the natrural sources they will be taking down to make it, it will still create more CO2 emissions than before. Some theories being corruption (paying the citizens) or it also may be lack of knowledge, these citizens being lied to about our environment. And with the government popularity in Mexico I do not find this hard to believe.
