DEFINITION
Microplastics are tiny particles of plastic that are less than five millimeters in size. They are a type of plastic pollution that has become a significant environmental concern.
HOW THEY AFFECT THE ENVIRONMENT
Marine Life: Small organisms like plankton can mistake microplastics for food and consume them. This ingestion can lead to physical harm, reproduction, and even death.
Habitat Disruption: They can settle on the seabed, in sediment layers, or accumulate on shorelines. Global Distribution: Microplastics are widespread and have been found in various environments globally. They can be transported over long distances through ocean currents, atmospheric deposition, or via wildlife migration, thereby impacting even pristine ecosystems.
How does it affect humans
Ingestion: Microplastics can enter the human body through the ingestion of contaminated food and water. Nano Plastics: Their small size raises concerns about their ability to penetrate cells and tissues
How can we reduce microplastic pollution?
Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Single-use plastics are a significant contributor to microplastic pollution. Raise Awareness: Educate others about the issue of microplastic pollution and its environmental impacts
