How to do Section 6
Section 6 tests your reading skills and ability to understand the main points of short and extended written texts. The texts are authentic text types and they include newspaper articles, magazine articles, leaflets, brochures and website articles. The questions look at content, style, connotation, implication and inference. In this section you are being tested on: Your overall reading comprehension *If you can understand in detail texts which are long and complex, as long as you can reread difficult sections. These texts may or may not be related to your own areas of special interest. Your ability to read for information and argument. *If you can understand in detail a wide range of long and complex texts which you're likely to come across in social, professional or academic life. *If you can identify precise points of detail including attitudes and opinions.
*First read the instructions and check what text type you are reading. Read the title. These two pieces of information help you to construct an idea of what type of language to expect, what the purpose of the text will be and how the text may be constructed. *Next skim read the whole text once. Your aim is to get a general understanding of the whole text and the main points, arguments, or opinions expressed. You don't need to worry about details at this point. *Read the example question, and its answer. Find the part of the text where the answer comes from, and check how the question paraphrases the wording in the text. Look for phrases or individual words. *Note that the answer for each question will be a word or phrase taken directly from the text. *Look at the first question. Notice the specific type of information that you need to find. Underline any other key words in the question. *Find the part of the text which gives you the answer. Remember that the answers always follow the same order as the questions. Find a paraphrase for one part of the question, and then read carefully around it to find the answer to the question. *Write the word or phrase from the text into the answer space. Then read the question and the answer together, to make sure that they are coherent. *The answers are never more thant a short phrase. If you find you're writing a long piece of text, read the question again carefully to identify exactly what information you need to give.
