Jacques Cartier

French explorer
  • Between 1534 and 1542, Jacques Cartier led three maritime expeditions to the interior of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River. He was the first European to explore the river and to set eyes on present-day Quebec City and Montreal.
  • Cartier heard two captured guides speak the Iroquian word 'kanata', meaning 'village'. By the 1550's, the name Canada began appearing on maps.
  • For his navigational prowess, Cartier is still considered by many as the founder of 'Canada'.
