Irregular Verbs in English

Verbs that change

Opposite to the Regular Verbs, the Irregular Verbs do not have a fixed ending. It canvary from not changing the spelling, to those which remain the same in the present and past, to those that change in present, past and past participle. There are 4 main categories:

  1. All three forms of the verb are the same
  2. Verbs with the same Past Simple and Past Participle
  3. Verbs with the same base form and past participle
  4. Verbs with a different base form, past simple, and past participle
Category 3: Verbs with the Same Base Form and Past Participle

These verbs share the same spelling in the base form (present) and the past participle.

Verbs ending in W, X or Y.

just add -ED

If the verb ends in W, X or Y or the inal syllable is not stressed, we add -ED

  • She fixed her car easily.
  • We enjoyed our time in North Korea.
  • It snowed profusely yesterday.
  • watch- watched
  • look- looked
  • listen- listened

The Regular Verbs in English are those that take -ED in their endings. For example:

two-syllable verbs ending in consonant+vowel+consonant

just add -ED

when the stress is in the last syllable, we only add -ED to the verbs. Notice these examples:

  • What happened?
  • They entered through the back yard.
  • She offered him a new position with a higher salary.
  • Many people suffered from famine.
Category 1: All forms are the same

consontant+vowel+consonant

double last consonant and add -ED

When a verb ends in a consonant, we have to double this, and then add the ending for past: -ED. For example:

  • The policeofficer stopped the thief from escaping.
  • They admitted that they were in a mistake.
  • Mom planned a surprise party for my dad.
  • I referred the students to the website for more practice
  • They committed a serious crime so the jury sent them to jail.

Have you noticed that some verbs take -ED in their endings and some others change considerably? It's because in English we have two main types of verbs: Regular and Irregular. The Regular verbs only add -Ed to the ending. But be careful, there are some rules. The Irregular verbs change its form and pronunciation. Look at these examples:

  • Yesterday I read the newspaper
  • They lived in France for some years
  • Last month I studied a lot for my exams
  • Aristotle was a famous Philosopher

There are some exceptions, or differences between the regular and irregular verbs in British and American English.It is important to check these differences, as sometimes if you are taking a UK based test, you might find them. Verbs ending in "E"

just add -D

There are many verbs ending in "E", in this case we only add a -D to the end. ex. You can review a list in here: https://wordmom.com/regular-verbs/end-e

  • I lived in Korea for two years and then moved to China
  • I loved the surprise my friends had for me.
  • She smiled when she saw her husband coming through the door.
  • They danced until their feet hurt.
  • play-played
  • wait-waited
  • work-worked
  • rain-rained

Many verbs take the past form only by adding -ED to the end. For example:

General rule: add -ED

Notice that there are no changes in the spelling, just the ED.
