WHEN WE USE
We use the past simple, past continuous, and past perfect and continuous tenses to narrate past events. These tenses are sometimes combined to show how different events in the past relate to each other. Depending on which tenses are used, we can describe past actions in various ways.

The rope was swaying from side to side. -To describe continuous past actions happening at the same time.
