TAG QUESTIONS

GRAMMAR 2

Tag questions are short interrogative phrases added to the end of a declarative statement to turn it into a question. Example: You're my friend, aren't you?
Tag questions typically consist of an aux. verb ("is," "has," "will") and a pronoun ("he," "she," "they") that reflects the subject of the sentence.
They are used to seek confirmation or to express uncertainty or doubt about something. They are commonly used in spoken English.

The two main rules for forming tag questions are that when a sentence is affirmative, the question is negative. When a sentence is negative, the question is positive.

He is a doctor, isn't he?(El es doctor, ¿verdad?/¿cierto?)

Case 1: Affirmative sentence + negative question tag.

They are your parents, aren't they?

We are students, aren't we?

My brother is not at home, is he?(Mi hermano no esta en casa, ¿verdad?/¿cierto?)

Case 2: Negative sentence + Positive question tag.

He doesn't work here, does he?

She didn't buy a dog, did she?

You don't have questions, do you?

Let's do some practice!
