An adverb is a word that describes how an action is carried out. Adverbs can add details to a verb or an adjective.

1st Grade Review

TOO vs VERY

The adverbs "too" and "very" are used with an adjective.

examples: very hot or too hot "hot" is the adjective in both phrases.

The coffee is very hot, but I can drink it.

very hot= it is hot, but possible to drink

very= a large amount

The coffee is too hot. I can't drink it.

too hot= it is not possible to drink

too normally has a negative meaning

Adverbs tell...how? where? when?

Some adverbs tell you when.

Example: Matt leaves for work soon. When does he leave? He leaves soon.

Some adverbs tell you where.

Example: The kids like to play outside. Where do they play? They play outside.

2nd Grade

-ly adverbs

Some adverbs tell you how. They usually end in -ly

EXAMPLES:She runs quickly. How does she run? She runs quickly. The door closed loudly. How did the door close? It closed loudly.

How did it protect its puppy? It protected the puppy carefully. The adverb is carefully.
