Growing MORE than 1/2 illuminated

90 degree angle between moon, earth and sun

Answer: Moon phases refer to the different ways the Moon appears from Earth over roughly a month.

Earth, moon, and sun are aligned Entire sunlight portion is now facing us!

First stage When moon, earth, and sun are aligned What does this stage look like? Why do you think it looks like this? Answer: The ½ of the moon being illuminated is on the back side!

Shrinking MORE than 1/2 illuminated

Growing LESS than 1/2 illuminated

Shrinking LESS than 1/2 illuminated

90 degree angle between moon, earth and sun

  • Caused by moon’s position as it orbits around the Earth
  • Moon is always ½ illuminated
  • Depending on position of moon, we see more or less than ½ of moon illuminated

Teams: Divide the group into two teams. One will argue in favor (Affirmative Team) and the other will argue against the proposition (Negative Team). Prepare Arguments: Each team should come up with three main arguments to support their side. Presentations: Each team will present their arguments. Rebuttal: After each team presents, there should be a round of rebuttals where teams address the arguments made by the opposing team and argue against them. Conclusion: Each team will have a chance to summarize their arguments and make a final statement.
