  • Same coefficient as English Language and Literature and History-Geography.
  • Designed to develop analytical and critical thinking skills as well as research experience.

what is 'connaissance du monde'?

  • Develop your understanding of a variety of issues and questions relevant to the world today using topics studied in section lessons.
  • Define a research question and undertake independant research.
  • use a variety of sources of information, identifying different perspectives and evaluating the validity of the arguments and evidence presented.
  • You will also need to engage with a relevant international partner;an individual or organisation who can make a contribution towards you addressing your research question.

Theme 3: Building a common future

Theme 1: Thinking about society

Theme 1: Thinking about society

Strand B (1B): Understanding the functioning of the State, analysing the life of institutions

Strand (1C): Developing a personal and critical view of developments in society

Strand A (1A): Understanding how societies are structured and evolve

Theme 2: living in the world

Strand B (2B): Moving around

Strand (2C): Cultural and linguistic diversity

Strand A (2A): Sharing Spaces

Theme 3: Building a common future

Strand B (3B): Seeking ways to achieve sustainable development

Strand (3C): Innovate, create, evolve

Strand A (3A): Protect, conserve, improve

AN EXAMPLE: theme 1 - strand C (1C)

Developing a personal and critical view of developments in society This theme explores how the arts and literature reflect society, but also influence it. Journalism and the media (including social media) generate and shape public debate about political and social issues, and have the power to inform – but also to disinform.

AN EXAMPLE: theme 1 - strand C (1C)

Key Questions to consider

British Section specificities:

• How do the arts deal with current issues? • What role do they play in the dissemination and debate of ideas? • What role do the media and opinion-shapers play in current events and developments in society, and on shaping the future? • What role does the state play in encouraging and financing artistic commentary on social or political issues? • How much freedom do artists, creators and authors have when they engage with social or political issues?

• The role of the media and social networks (freedom and ownership of the press: BBC, tabloids, etc.). • Counter-culture and protest movements in the UK; Establishment/Anti-Establishment; humour and satire in social critique, media, and politics. • British cultural production (fiction, film, literature, TV, art) and its global influence

what is a research log?

A Research Log is a a list of all the sources you have looked at towards a single research goal. It is a record of when you did your research, where you did it (the database used for example) and a report of your findings, problems and questions.

In a nutshell, your research log is your research's private diary. All your thoughts, feelings, findings, questions, doubts, etc. belong there!

what is a research log? An example

how to keep an online research log?

Why keep your log online? Easier to access, easier to present to teacher/classmates, less likely to be forgotten at home. How to keep it online? * Google Doc: but requires a Google account... * Padlet: also requires an account... * Word doc saved in the ENT workspace: that's what I would do :)

how to keep track of your research?

questions & advices

O7

"Do we get a grade on the bulletin for CdM?"

You get a comment on your bulletin for the first term and a grade for the second term.

"Does the CdM count for the contrôle continu?"

No it does not. The only CdM grade which counts for the bac is the one you get for the oral exam in Terminale.

"Then why do you give us a grade for the 2nd term?"

To let you know where you stand in terms of engagement, research skills, project partner, structure, communication, etc. 1/2

As every other grade in Première, your CdM grade will reflect on your Livret Scolaire and eventually on Parcoursup. 2/2

"What are the criteria used to grade CdM in the bulletin?"

CdM grades and comments are based on the same criteria as the oral exam. You can find an adapted assessment grid on Pronote.

Some advice

From your wise and awesome teacher

1. "Do not think you have plenty of time and that you can start in Terminale!"

2. "Do not think you don't have enough time and that everything needs to be over in June!"

3. "Do not work on your project ONLY during our weekly sessions!"

4. "Fail to prepare? Prepare to fail!"

thanks
