  • Engage: The teacher gains an understanding of students' prior knowledge and identifies any knowledge gaps.
  • Explore: students actively explore the new concept through concrete learning experiences/ activities.
  • Explain: This is a teacher-led phase that helps students synthesize new knowledge and ask questions if they need further instruction.
  • Elaborate: focuses on giving students space to apply what they’ve learned. This helps them to develop a deeper understanding.
  • Evaluate: This is when the teacher assesses students’ understanding through formal and informal assessment.
Resources: The BSCS of the 5E Instructional Model: Origin and Effectiveness.
  • In PBI, the stage of engagement is purposeful and real-world connected. Students are presented with a thought-provoking question/problem.
  • In PBI, students brainstorm solutions instead of the teacher giving them all the information.
  • In PBI, students inquire, research, and engage to discover the content, instead of just listening to the teacher talk all class long.
  • In PBI, students discover the answer or solve the problem, and they apply it to real-world circumstances.
  • In PBI, students may present their products in front of experts, and not just to classmates and teachers.
  • In PBI, there's frequent reflection and continuous feedback during the beginning, middle, and end of the unit, while in the 5E, it might be assessed at the end of the unit.
  • In PBI, collaboration is key.
  • And students apply 21st-century skills essential for post-secondary success.

  • Both models allow collaboration, but the PBI is the main format of student interaction.
  • There's inquiry through research and discussion.
  • The teacher assesses the content through different formats, informal and formal.
  • The teacher plans how to activate prior knowledge and build off of it.
  • Teacher-led lectures with some differences: in the PBI model there are lectures based on student-produced NTKs plus the support the teacher thinks is necessary.
