WHAT IS ANDRAGOGY?
- Andragogy (an-druh-go-jee) is described as the art and science of helping adults learn (Nganga, 2023).
- It is synonomus with the term adult learning.
- Teaching adults focuses on learning the necessary skills or knowledge to further both personal and professional devlopment.
- Utilizing this approach creates a meaningful and relevant professional development expereince for the adult participants (Williams, 2022).
- It helps create a personalized and meaningful professional development that truly matters to your learners.
- Participants are able to make real-world connections and build a strong foundation of understanding for the given topic.
MALCOLM KNOWLES' FIVE PRINCIPLES
Malclom Knowles was an American educator known for making assumptions about how the charateristics of adult learners are differnet than the assumptions of child learners (Pappas, 2013). He made four assumptions in 1980 and added a fifth assumption four years later.
Motivation to Learn
Orientation to Learning
Readiness to Learn
Adult Learner Experience
Self-Concept
As one matures, their self-concept changes from being a dependent personality towards being self-directed.
As on matures, their perspective changes from using their knowledge later, to applying their knowledge immediately. Their mindest changes from learning one subject to learning real-world problems
As one matures, their readiness to learn increases and they want to further develop their social and/or professional roles.
As one matures, their motivation to learn becomes internal rather thatn external.
As one matures, they go through expereiences that become their resource for learning.
RATIONAL FOR ANDRAGOGY IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Andragogy is a crucial part of professional development because as adults we need to take part in focused trainings that are giving us information that we can work with and use in our own classrooms (Williams, 2022).
- Adults do not do well when they are simply spoon fed (given) information.
- Instead, they must be challenged and have purpose in order to thrive in the professional devlopment.
- Andragogy allows for professional developments to focus on the participants' outcomes rather than just the expertise of the speaker (Williams, 2022).
- That means when planning a professional development one is thinking about why it is important, how is it relevant, how can it be a memorable experience, what problem needs to be solved, and what is expected from the learners when they walk away from the training (Williams, 2022).
- Adults learn more in these professional developments because they find relevance in the topic, are pulling from their past experiences, learning about ways to solve a specific problem, as well as how to immediately take it back to their classroom (Nganga, 2023).
- Adults need to see the how and why it is necessary or beneficial for them to be involved in the professional development.
BEST PRACTICES FOR ADULT LEARNERS
Often times, professional developments are designed using pedagogy which works great for child learning but not so much for adult learning. Teachers find themselves feeling like the training is a waste of time. This is not necessarily because of the information being presented, but instead how that information is being presented. Andragogy, or the adult learning, helps design better professional development opportunites that are focused and based on collaboration (Anders, 2023).
Problem Focused Trainings
Taking Responsibility for Learning
Intrinsic Motivation
Building on Experience
Self-directed Learning
Adult learners do best when they are learning in an enviroment that they want to learn in insstead of being forced to. They do well when they are able to find something that motivates them from within to learn. .
Adult lerners thrive in specific scenario-based trainings because they are searching for ways to fix a problem. During these type of trainings, teachers are able to collaborate with one another and get other perspectives or ideas.
Adult learners utilize their past experiences to make connections and build on what they are learning. This gives them different perspectives, methods, or approaches while helping to improve their craft.
Adult learners have specific ways that they like to take in information. Giving them that opportunity to explore a topic on their own allows them to better retain and apply the information.
Adult lives revolove around responsibilities and they want the same with how they learn. Adult learners thrive when they are given as much choice as possible.
BIAS IN PROFESSIONAL DEVLEOPMENT
- Bias, especially implicit bias, is a part of our world and surrounds us on a daily basis.
- These are the attitudes and stereotypes that affect the way that people percieve and act towards others (Safir, 2016).
- Bias can be seen in professional settings when one set of professionals treats another set of professionals differently based on assumptions of their level of knowledge, years in the profession, or what their specialty may be (grade level taught).
- Sometimes this is notable when a presenter feels they know the most because they are presenting, or maybe a seasoned techer looks down on the presenter because they have been around longer.
- Bias can be reduced or elimintaed in a professional development setting when/if you (Safir, 2026):
- Become aware of your biases so that you can interupt them.
- Study and teach colleagues about implicit bias.
- Listen to what others have to say.
- A trusting relationship is established between all involved.
- Differences can be set aside for the greater good.
