The Summer Institute

4th-9th grade · June-July

In the five-week Summer Institute, Bridges students engage in language arts, math, art, and P.E. classes on campus at partner independent schools. They take field trips throughout Baltimore, build friendships with peers and high school volunteers, and compete with their team to win the coveted House Cup trophy - earning points for participation, winning camp competitions, and more. The Summer Institute is designed to increase students' knowledge of the world in and out of the classroom, instill a love of learning, and develop skills and aspirations for success in middle school, high school, college, and their future careers.

Bridges high schoolers take part in five weeks of paid college and career readiness programming each summer. Programs differentiate by grade and involve hands-on job experience with partner employers throughout the city, exploration of different career industries, and assistance with the college application process. Much of the program is hosted on the campus of Loyola University Maryland. The High School Summer Program is designed to expose high schoolers to college and career experiences, develop important soft skills necessary for success in adulthood, and prepare students for their unique academic and professional pathways post-high school.

Career Access Programs

Post-High School · august

Bridges provides various career access programs, such as the Early Career Encounter, which offers rising college juniors and seniors five weeks of career exposure and training. Students are paired with two Bridges career access partners, who provide structured workplace learning that aligns with their degree interests, including healthcare, finance, STEM, nonprofit, and creative fields. Prior to their career placements, students participate in an orientation that includes professional skill development led by Bridges staff and industry partners to help them prepare for a successful experience. The program equips Bridges students with the confidence, preparation, and guidance to take their next steps toward long-term career success.

The after-school program

4th-5th grade · september-may

Bridges' youngest students attend the After-School Program once per week throughout the school year for homework help, academic enrichment, connection with their Bridges peers, and individual support from high school volunteers and Bridges staff. The After-School Program establishes a strong connection between Bridges staff, students, volunteers, and families from the start. Regular programming and access to support sets the stage for meaningful engagement with Bridges as students grow.

weekend enrichment & Tailored support

6th-8th grade · september-may

Bridges Middle schoolers gather throughout the school year for regular tutoring sessions and one-on-one support. Bridges tutors meet with students once a week to hone their academic skills, receive homework help, and prepare for exams. Monthly weekend events provide Bridges students with access to academic support, community building, and enrichment. These experiences keep students connected with Bridges peers and staff throughout the year, provide touchpoints for academic monitoring, and build skills that are necessary for success in middle school.

6th-8th grade · september-may

Bridges high schoolers receive monthly enrichment opportunities as well as individualized support. Bridges high school staff provide students with monthly touchpoints and coaching geared toward academic success. They also have access to weekly academic support from college-aged tutors via Bridges’ partnership with Loyola University Maryland. Additionally, high school students gather on campus at Bridges’ independent school locations for monthly enrichment programming focused on college and career readiness.

Group & individual support

After high school, Bridges helps students navigate their diverse pathways through individualized support, group events and workshops, and college affordability resources. Students attend regular meetings with Bridges staff, which focus on the following areas: transition into college, navigating situations that can derail success, and maintaining strong academic standing and extracurricular involvement. Additonally, Bridges provides college students with a laptop in their first year as well as a stipend each semester to cover textbooks and extra expenses not often accounted for in financial aid packages.

Bridges provides 5th grade families with one-on-one middle school placement support. Families engage in a series of meetings with knowledgeable and caring Bridges staff designed to equip them with an understanding of the choices available to students, including public, charter, and private schools, and provide personalized support through the admissions process. Middle school placement support helps to prevent the school choice process from becoming a barrier, instead leveraging the experience and knowledge of Bridges staff to ensure students are well-positioned for success throughout the transition to middle school.

Families engage in a series of meetings with knowledgeable and caring Bridges staff designed to equip them with an understanding of the choices available to students, including public, charter, and private schools, and provide personalized support through the admissions process. Bridges provides twelfth grade students and families with individualized post-high school guidance support. Over a series of meetings and workshops, high school seniors work with Bridges staff to complete college essays and applications, apply for scholarships and financial aid, review acceptance packages, and commit to a college. Bridges is committed to pathing non-college-going students to careers with financial security as well, including trade school, apprenticeships, and more.

Bridges provides college students with individualized guidance and support in their career search. This includes connections with meaningful internship opportunities, job shadows, and professional contacts to help clarify students’ professional goals and expand their networks. This final stepping stone in the Bridges journey is meant to help students land in fulfilling careers that lead to financial stability.
