They refer to the combination of VERBS usually followed by TO-INFINITIVE or -ING form ( gerund ). Ex: I don't want to see you again. I enjoy travelling a lot.

Common verbs that can be followed by infinitives: AFFORD BEGIN HOPE PREFER AGREE CHOOSE INTEND PREPARE APPEAR CONTINUE LEARN PRETEND ARRANGE DECIDE LIKE PROMISE ASK EXPECT LOVE PROPOSE ATTEMPT FORGET MANAGE REFUSE CAN'T BEAR HAPPEN MEAN REGRET BEG HELP OFFER REMEMBER SEEM START TRY WANT
KEY NOTES
It is important to note that some of these verbs can be followed by OBJECT + INFINITIVE . Some of them are : advise , allow, cause, enable, encourage , expect , force , invite , remind , or warn. Ex: I want you to study harder. They don't allow people to smoke here. Some verbs ( let, make, see ,hear ,feel ,watch ,notice ,have and sometimes know and help ) are followed by OBJECT + INFINITIVE without TO. Ex: I heard her open the door. Let me explain, please.

After some verbs we can use an -ing form. Some common verbs are: ADMIT FEEL LIKE SPEND AVOID KEEP CAN'T STAND CONSIDER MISS SUGGEST CAN'T HELP FINISH UNDERSTAND DISLIKE FORGIVE ENJOY MIND FANCY MISS IMAGINE PRACTISE

There are some cases in which there is no difference of meaning and some verbs can be followed either by TO-INFINITIVE or an -ING FORM. BEGIN CONTINUE HATE INTEND LIKE LOVE PREFER START Ex: I started playing chess / to play chess when I was six.

There are some cases in which there is a difference of meaning. These verbs are : REMEMBER , FORGET, STOP, TRY and REGRET. REMEMBER / FORGET Ex: I'll never forget meeting the Queen. ( We use -ING form as we refers back to the past) Ex: I forgot to buy some bread on my way home. You must remember to take Bill to the airport. ( We use TO INFINITIVE as we refer forwards to something we still have or had to do at the moment of remembering or forgetting. ) STOP Ex: I stopped smoking last year. ( I don't smoke anymore. Stop doing an activity. Ex: Liz stopped to have a coffee. ( She didn't finish her activity. She made a pause.)

REGRET Ex: I regret leaving school at 14. It was a big mistake. ( We use -ING form as it refers back to the past. Ex: We regret to inform you that the flight has been cancelled. ( We use TO INFINITIVE as we are going to give bad news.) TRY Ex: I tried sending her flowers and giving her presents but she still wouldn't speak to me. ( We use -ing form as we are making some kind of experiment to make things work.) Ex: I tried to change the wheel but my hands were too cold. ( We use TO INFINITIVE as we are making efforts to make things work.)
KEY NOTES
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS We use FEEL, HEAR, SEE, and WATCH + INFINITIVE without TO when we want to say that we saw the whole action from the beginning to end. Ex: I watched Mary paint a picture. ( I saw Mary start on the painting , paint it and finish it ). We use FEEL, HEAR, SEE and WATCH + -ING FORM when we witness only part of the action. Ex: I watched Mary painting a picture. ( Mary was painting when I saw her.)
