Purpose

In this small move, the teacher gives each person a title or role which allows the teacher to ensure more equitable participation. Labeling each person's role minimizes the ability for some students to "hide".

• A/B Partners
• Numbered Roles
• Playing Cards (Table)
• Rainbow Partners
• Alphabetically Partners

Steps

• Think of how students collaborate in your class, and give them specific labels that correspond.
• When you ask students to collaborate, use those assigned roles to tell students who will speak first.
• The next time students collaborate, alternate who speaks first using the same labels.
