Introduction
As the colossal Christ the Redeemer statue looms over the favelas of Rio De Janiero, the citizens of the area gather to celebrate one common culture: Samba. This can mean the music, the parades, the dances and everything involved with this gem of Brazilian culture.

When Does The Rio Carnival Occur?
The Rio Samba festival occurs every year on the 9th of Febuary. The parades celebrate the beginning of Lent, and started in the city in 1723. However, Samba was banned for a period of time due to the government believing it came from slaves following the abolition of slavery, which the Brazillian goverment did not like.

Story
Carnival festivities in Brazil date back to 1723 with Portugese immigrants introducing the tradition of Entrudo (a Portugese celebration). People on the streets threw buckets of water on each other, throwing mud and food as well. This resulted in fights and riots.

Samba De Janeiro
Why Is Samba Celebrated?
Samba became integral to Brazilian Carnivals, and nowadays is a way of celebrating the African culture in Brazil as a result of the Slave Trade.
What Is The Most Important Part?
In my opinion, the most important part of the Rio Festival is the people coming together to celebrate. Due to Samba's origins rooted in slavery, and the ban on the celebration, I believe that it shows the diversity and equality of modern Brazil.
THE END
Fun Fact!
The Rio Carnival was inspired by a Portugese festival in the 1650's, Entrudo!
Samba De Janeiro
Zenker, Moreira & Engels
Samba De Janeiro is a remix of several works by the three South American composers mentioned above by a German pop group known as Bellini in 1997. It puts a modern twist on the typical Brazillian Samba genre, and the song has been played at Samba Carnivals in recent times.
