FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS

  1. We often use follow-up questions when we are listening, to show that we are interested or surprised. They often do not need a response. They are like response tokens such as really, okay, yeah. Follow-up questions are sometimes called reply questions.
  2. Follow-up questions are formed using the auxiliary verb or modal verb contained in the statement that the question is responding to. If there is no auxiliary verb or modal verb in the statement, we use do in the present and did in the past (the verbs in the statements are underlined):

MODAL VERBS

WHAT ARE MODAL VERBS

  1. THEY are special verbs that behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal verbs like "work, play, visit..." They give additional information about the function of the main verb that follows it.
  2. Here are some characteristics of modal verbs:
  3. They never change their form. You can't add "s", "ed", "ing"...
  4. They are always followed by an infinitive without "to" (e.i. the bare infinitive.)
  5. They are used to indicate modality and allow speakers to express certainty, possibility, willingness, obligation, necessity, ability
