We use the present simple tense when we want to talk about fixed habits or routines – things that don’t change.
Present simple
When do we use it?
I play basketball every Sunday.
Affirmative
I watch cartoons every day. My dad makes dinner every evening.
With 3rd person singular (he, she, it) we add -s or -es
Negative
I don't watch the news. He doesn't make lunch.
With 3rd person singular (he, she, it) we write doesn't
Interrogative
What time do you wake up every morning? Does she like ice cream?
With 3rd person singular (he, she, it) we write does
Stative verbs
These are verbs that only can be used in present simple, HARDLY EVER in present continuous - Thoughts and opinions: agree, believe, doubt, guess, imagine, know, mean, recognise, remember, suspect, think, understand - Feelings and emotions: dislike, hate, like, love, prefer, want, wish - Senses and perceptions: appear, be, feel, hear, look, see, seem, smell, taste - Possession and measurement: belong, have, measure, own, possess, weigh.
We can use the present continuous to talk about things we are doing now or thing that are happening in the near future.
Present continuous
When do we use it?
She's eating an apple now (right now) We are meeting tomorrow (future)
Affirmative
I'm playing hockey now. She's studying English now. We are cooking an apple pie right now.
Conjugate verb TO BE! And don't forget the -ING!
Negative
I'm NOT playing hockey now. She ISN'T studying English now. We AREN'T cooking an apple pie right now.
Interrogative
Are you playing hockey now? Is she studying English now? Are they cooking an apple pie right now?
Important!
With present continuous we DON'T use frequency adverbs
