Key Characteristics:

Remote Professional Development via Online Video Broadcast

Key Characteristics:

1) This model of professional development is being delivered through online platforms and video broadcasts.2) The main way of delivering this type of professional development is using online platforms with live or pre-recorded videos. (Forgarty & Pete, 2017)

Individualized Professional Learning PlansAdvantages:

  • Since it is individualized by the teacher, this focuses on specific areas of improvement.
  • Depending on the specific needs, this will allow for self-directed learning that the teacher can map or plan out the specific professional development needed for themselves.
Disadvantages:
  • As it is for each individual teacher, this may require significant time and effort to develop for each educator as a school to keeping a running record for all educations within the school site.
  • Depending of each teacher's needs, their specific goals might not align with broader organizational goals for the school or district in general.
Example Activities:
  • Attending workshops or courses based on personal interests such as STEM training.
  • Attending a CUE Conference workshop that provide action research projects ideas focused on individual classroom needs.

District wide Professional Development PlanAdvantages:

  • This model ensures equity in access to professional development as it is provided by the district level.
  • This model will also fosters a shared vision and collaboration among educators aligning with the district guidelines.
Disadvantages:
  • Since it is of district level, this model might not address individual needs of specific teachers.
  • It is of general topics for the entire district so it is difficult to cater to specific school-level challenges.
Example Activities:
  • District-wide workshops on implementing new curriculum.
  • Training on new assessment methods for all teachers.

Communities of LearnersAdvantages:

  • This model will provide opportunities for teachers to provide support and encourages peer support and learning.
  • The schedule of meetings can be of flexibilibility based on all the teachers' scheduling and topics that they can meet weekly or monthly.
Disadvantages:
  • Even though this model can provide support, this may lack formal structure and consistency during those meetings.
  • This will require time and commitment from participants to attend all meetings.
Example Activities:
  • Book study groups exploring relevant educational literature for specific grade levels.
  • Teacher-led workshops on instructional strategies to help in the classroom for math.

  • This model is targeted and relevant to the school context so help the specific needs of each school site.
  • Since it is site specific, this model will help encourages ownership and buy-in from staff.
Disadvantages:
  • Due to gearing towards the exact need of each school, this model may not address district-level priorities.
  • It is within the school site so there might be limited external expertise and resources.
Example Activities:
  • Grade-level teachers collaborating on lesson planning.
  • Professional learning communities focused on student data analysis such as STAR data results for Reading and Math.

  • This model will suit educators with busy schedules or geographically dispersed.

  • Due to being online, this format can lack face-to-face interaction and networking with one others in a physical setting.
