Cultural relativism
Violations of human rights
Various forms of relativism have also undermined the universality of human rights. Some States have refused to recognize entire categories of rights, such as economic, social and cultural rights, or sought to deny rights to entire categories of people. In 2010, Europe and the US put pressure on Malawi to free jailed homosexuals. This sparked widespread anger in Africa, where some people believe homosexuality is not part of African culture and so should be outlawed.
examples of cultural relativism
- Opposition to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- Suspending Judgment of Female Genital Mutilation.
- Suspending Judgment of Public Breastfeeding.
- Child Labor.
- Eating Habits.
