BACKGROUND

Theores of Language Learnin

Nolan Chomsky

The innatism perspective

Chomsky’s hypothesis says that all human languages are based on some innate universal principles. In his 1959 review of Skinner's book Verbal Behavior, Chomsky argued that children are biologically programmed for language and that language develops in the child in the same way that other biological functions develop.

LANGUAGE ADQUISITION

The rejection of behaviorism as an explanation for first language acquisition was partly triggered by Chomsky, who argued that innate knowledge of the principles of Universal Grammar permits all children to acquire the language of their environment during a critical period of their development. The environment makes only a basic contribution, the child's biological endowment will do the rest. He concluded that children minds are not blank slates to be filled by imitating language they hear in the environment.

Theories of Language Learning

There are a range of logical possibilities concerning whether or not Universal Grammar remains available for the L2 learner: First hypothesis Second hypothesis Third hypothesis

UNIVERSAL GRAMMAR

UG described in Chomsky’s Syntactic structures work, proposed that a set of universal principles characterizes all human languages, in which learners appear to know what to do with a language even though they have not been explicitly taught certain rules; contrasting with the idea held by behaviorists and structuralists in that it regarded language as an innate ability.
