03. Colonization in modern countries
Colonization is the action of settling in a foreign territory. Is the process by which a colony is founded.
01. What is colonization?
02. Artificial states
Nations that were colonized without taking into account their culture, social and political structures pre - existed.
These states were often drawn along arbitrary lines without regard for the ethnic, linguistic, or historical boundaries of the local populations.
03. How does colonization affect modern independent countries that used to be colonies?
Colonialism left the independent nation unprepared to function in the modern global nation-state system and vulnerable to outside influence and pressure.
Exploitation
It often leaves behind a legacy of economic exploitation and resource extraction.
H1
External pressure
Leave the independent nations vulnerable to external influence and pressure, leading to ongoing neo-colonialism, where more powerful states meddle in the domestic affairs of less powerful ones
H3
Lack of experience
Disrupts and undermines indigenous social, political, and economic structures, leaving the newly independent nations with a lack of institutional knowledge and experience in self-governance
H2
Neo-colonialism
04.
Is the practice of some colonial powers over other colonized economies. Thus, through a select group of people, it is pursued to hold the power and control over that territory.
- The interests of global capital and multinational corporations are prioritized over the rights and well-being of the citizens of the affected nation.- Can manifest through economic exploitation, unequal trade agreements, foreign intervention in domestic politics, and the perpetuation of power imbalances between nations.
Neo-colonization
05. Colonization in Mexico
The period of Mexican history that elapsed between the Spanish conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlan and the conquest, domination and population of all Mexican territories by the Spaniards.
In April 1519, a scouting army of approximately 600 men, led by Hernán Cortés, landed on the coast of the present state of Veracruz. From that point on, charges were handed out to begin a new campaign of conquest,
06. Effects of colonization in Mexico
1. Imposition of culture
3. New breeds
The beginning of cultural miscegenation including evangelization.
Imposed their language, religion, and social structures on the indigenous peoples of Mexico. This led to the erasure and marginalization of indigenous cultures and the loss of native languages and traditions.
4. Land distribution
2. Exploitation of resources
Colonization had a significant impact on the country's land distribution. Spanish colonizers seized vast amounts of land, displacing indigenous communities and concentrating ownership in the hands of a few elites
Colonization resulted in the exploitation of Mexico's natural resources, such as silver and gold, which were extracted and sent back to Spain.
