THE GUNPOWDER PLOT
This is King James VI of Scotland and James I of England. He was king of England from 1603 to 1625.
Guy Fawkes, with many other secret Catholics, was very unhappy that Protestant James I was King of England.King James I was scared that Catholics would cause problems during his reign, so he was very strict.Everyone had to go to Protestant churches and follow Protestant rules.Anyone who didn't follow these rules, was punished.
Guy Fawkes was born in York in 1570. His mother was a secret Catholic, but his father was a Protestant. He learnt to work with explosives.
Robert Catesby was the leader of the group. He told the other men about his plan. He thought they should blow up the Parliament when parliament met next. As a consequence, the Protestant king would die.They started gathering barrels of powder and moving them into a house next to the Houses of Parliament.Unfortunately the meeting was delayed.
King James heard of the plot. He ordered a search. On the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes was found with barrels of powder in the cellar ! He was arrested and taken away to the Tower of London.All the conspirators were arrested and sentenced to death by hanging.
