what to expect

Steps of 3D Printing:

  1. Create your concept
  2. 3D Modeling
  3. CAM Slicing
  4. 3D Printing
  5. Prototype

2d vs 3d

Two Dimensional (2d): triangles, circles, squares have two dimesions- length & width

Three Dimensional (3D): cones, pyramids, sphere, cubes hace three deimsions - length width & depth

2d vs 3d

Properties of a 3D Shape

  • The face of a 3D shape is a flat surface. As you will learn, the surface of a 3D model is made up of hundreds of geometric faces.
  • An edge is a straight line connecting two faces of a shape.
  • A vertex (plural is vertices) is a corner of a shape, or a point where three or more edges intersect.

Do you think some of these design issues could have been avoided?

LET'S TALK ABOUT PROGRAMS

Licensed

  • Source code is public
  • Security risk is higher
  • Software is free to use
  • Source code is not shared with the public
  • Security risk is lower

1.2.2

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

You spent 3 months drawing this and post it on instagram to share with your friends...
...shortly after...you see your drawing on a tote bag in Target...you didn't have anyone ask you if it was ok, no one gave you credit, and no one paid you...
...is this ok?

Does this Happen Often?

How Would you solve this?

Does anything need done about this?

CopyRIGHT LAWS

Legal rights the creator has over their intellectual property (books, art, music, movies)

Economic Rights

Who gets paid?

Buying a shirt from an artist website?
Buying a shirt from a clothing company that an artist designed?
Buying a shirt from a company that used copyright free image?

Moral Rights

Who makes decision about the work?

You can allow or deny a movie company producting an animated adaptation of your story.

What happens if you take someone's work?

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

Recreates work and takes credit Selling/distributing copies of work without permision

Cease and desist Lawsuit filed against you

Am I allowed to follow tutorials or make fan art?!!

3D PRINTING?

Creating your own design

Using someone else's Design

vs
Patent free design
Paid to use design
Educational use
Copyright is for art Patent is for inventions
Taken, claimed as own, sold

Next Class:

EXIT TICKET:

Taking someone else's design & selling it as your own is called what?

A. Copyright infringement B. Patent

We used perspective

What is perspective?

PERSPECTIVE- HOW YOU VIEW SOMETHING

  • Can make 2D art look 3D
    • (like an illusion)
  • Can give us clear idea of what something will look like

WHY WOULD WE NEED TO SEE SOMETHING FROM ALL ANGLES?

Let me know in the chat

WHY WOULD WE NEED TO SEE SOMETHING FROM ALL ANGLES?

What could be on the backside of this house?

*In edio there is a drawing section. If you attend class you can submit blank

LINEAR PERSPECTIVE

aka

One Point Perspective

All angles are pointed towards one center point

Zoom Poll:

Have you ever heard of this before?

Do you notice anything about this photo?

  • Surface Model
  • Solid Model
  • Wireframe Model

TWO BASIC MODELS

Surface Models

Solid Models

Only represents suface (or exterior)

Represents surface & volume

Complex structures built usinng mathmatical equations

Like a shell

SOLID MODEL

Used by engineering, manufacturing, and medical industries

  • Mathmatically accurate models
  • More complicated interiors
  • Longer to render
  • Not as focused on the aesthetic

SOLID MODEL

What is taking up all that space?

  • Teeny tiny mesh structure
  • Includes a lot of vertex points
  • Longer to render
  • Parametric- strict rules or perameters to build the model based on what the model is going to be used for

WE MADE IT THROUGH OUR FIRST TEST!

How are you feeling?

A surgeon is planning a Kidney transplant...

Do you think they'll use a Solid or SURFACE MODEL?

SURFACE MODEL

Used for games & animated movies

  • Has less vertexes & information
  • Can render quicker
  • Appearance is more important than accuracy

Different types of

SURFACE MODELS

Polygon

*Shape with 3 or more edges

Wireframe

Does not include Faces

Low poly MODELS

Uses less polygons

How do these look?

Polygon is a shape that has 3 or more sides

High POLY MODELS

Uses more polygons

Polygon is a shape that has 3 or more sides

Which Do you prefer?

review

Surface model:

Low Poly Model:

  • Used by animators
  • Simple mesh
  • Known as shell models
Includes polygon & wireframe
  • Uses less polygons

Solid model:

  • Used by engineers, manufacturing, medical
  • Parametric
  • Includes surface & volume

BUILDING BLocks for all models - Basic shapes to create your design

**We will use this phrase the rest of the course

Let's Review:

In the chat:

What primitives make up this robot?

Modeling Techniques

Parametric- follow specific mathmatical parameters (set of rules)

Polygonal- putting together 2D polygons to create 3D models

NURBS- (Non-uniform rational basis splines) uses mathematical forumulas to calculate surfaces

Digital Sculpting- pushing and pulling the model like clay
