Instructions give you the steps to make something. When you write instructions, remember these rules: • Use short and simple sentences. • Keep an order. • Use command form of verbs. • Use specific words and numbers. Can you find these rules in the recipe? Write an example for each one on page 88 in your book.
Step 2: Pre-Writing
Run-on sentences are difficult to read and understand because they do not have conjunctions or punctuation marks to join them. Always split up complete sentences with periods or conjunctions like and, but, because, and so.

Writing Task
Step 2: Pre-Writing
Writing Task
Write a Recipe (50–70 Words)
List the ingredients
Talk to a partner or a family member and decide on a favorite dish. It can be as simple as a sandwich or as complicated as a chocolate cake.
Order the steps in the instructions
Copy these two charts in your notebook and write down the ingredients and the steps of the recipe.
Now, on page 90, write your own recipe following the model. Write on the gray lines. You will use the green lines later for revision and editing notes.
Step 3: Rough Draft
Start Writing
Read the recipe again. Use these checklists for your revisions. Then, exchange books with a partner to edit each other’s writing. Use the editing marks. Next, write any changes or comments you want to make on the green lines.
Step 4: Revising and Editing
Check your Writing
Review the changes and corrections on the green lines. On a piece of cardboard, design a nice recipe page with decorations. Your teacher can start a Class Cooking Blog online and upload all the recipes.
Step 5: Publishing
