What is Animation?

Ancient "Animation"

Illusion of putting images together to create motion
Opinion: Do you think this counts as animation?

slightly less ancient animation

Magic Lantern - 1603
How they made it animated
How it works

slightly less ancient animation

Thaumatrope - 1824

slightly less ancient animation

Phenakistoscope - 1831
(this video shows a modern day version)

slightly less ancient animation

Kineograph (also known as a flip book)- 1860
(this video shows a modern day version)

Silent Era: 1900-1930

Film was invented but did not come with sound

Felix the Cat 1919
Fantasmagorie : 1908 (first animation)
Steamboat Williw: 1928 (first animation to include sound)

1.1.2 3D Introduction to Principles of Animation

Physics in animation

How things move is important to making your animation believable

Different objects move differently

How they move depends on...

  • Their weight
  • The material
  • Any muscles/bones they have
  • The atmosphere around them
    • (wind/water/etc)

No Physics vs Physics

Principles of Animation

  1. squash and stretch
  2. anticipation
  3. staging
  4. straight-ahead action and pose-to-pose
  5. follow-through and overlapping action
  6. ease-in and ease-out
  7. arcs
  8. secondary action
  9. timing
  10. exaggeration
  11. solid drawing
  12. appeal

Squash & Stretch

Illusion of flexibility

Ease-in & Ease-Out

Speeding up and slowing down an action in animation

Example: cars take a few seconds to speed up and slow down in real life

Arcs

makes movement more fluid & natural

In an action movie: if a car was flying off of a ramp, it wouldn't fall straight down.

Follow-through & overlapping

Follow through- when body parts & acceseries move after the object has come to rest

Example: pony tail keeps moving after head has stopped

Overlapping action - different body parts move at different rates

Example: mouth is moving at different speed than the arms

Timing

the number of drawings or frames between poses

Would you say this has a lot of frames between poses? Or not a lot?

SEcondary Action

An action that happens as a result of another action

Example: arms move naturally as you walk
Example: the secondary action is the falling dominos

WHAT PRINCIPALS CAN YOU FIND?

  • Squash & Stretch
  • Ease In & Ease Out
  • Arcs
  • Follow Through
  • Overlapping
  • Timing
  • Secondary Action

1.2.1 Exploring Animation Forms

ANNOUNCEMENTS

3D Animation

Process: Modeling Texturing Rendering

Frame- single image in a series

2d Animation

Sequence- the order that images appear one after another

Traditional 2D Animation every frame is hand drawn and played sequentially to create the illusion of motion

Simpsons uses about 24 frames per second. The entire show averages between 30k-35k frames

2d Animation

Process: Inking & Layering

  • Objects are drawn or paintinged on celluloid sheets (transparent sheets)
  • Inking process means the drawing is refined anded add color to the lines
  • A new layer or a new sheet of paper is added to clean up the drawing

3D Animation

Creating movement in a three dimensional space

Stop Motion Animation

physical objects are moved little by little. Each photo is a frame.

  • Clay Animation
  • Cutout Animation
  • Lego Animation
  • Silhouette Animation
  • Pixilation - (uses photos of real people)

Stop Motion Animation

Claymation - creating clay figures and scenes, moving them slightly, taking a photo, putting all frames in a sequence

Stop Motion Animation

Cutout animation- uses flat materials like paper, cardboard, or cloth to cut and create characters, backgrounds, and props

Stop Motion Animation

LEGO- uses legos to create characters and backgrounds

Stop Motion Animation

Silhouette Animation- moving dark cutouts, preferably black against bright backgrounds, such as a white cloth, illuminated to accent the cutouts.

Stop Motion Animation

Pixilation Animation- uses photos of real people for frames

White Board Animation

  • In whiteboard animation, an image of a hand with a marker is animated in sync with the audio narration.
  • Mostly used by educators and trainers

Motion Graphics

  • Animated illustrations
  • Typically used to communicate information in an interesting, fast format

STORYBOARD

Set of drawings that depict the shots used in video production.

STORYBOARD

Story

  • The most important part of the storyboard
  • Helps to determine if any information is missing
  • Important to organize thoughts

STORYBOARD

Character

  • Most storyboard creators don't worry about the character details. They just draw with pen
  • More likely to see stick figures than fully thought out characters
  • Characters might develope personalities through the plot

STORYBOARD

Dialogue

  • Body language, facial expressions, and limited dialogue is used to help characters express their emotions
  • Loud noises can be shown through illustrations or exclimation points

STORYBOARD

Time Frame

  • Estimates how long a scene will take
  • Helps identify, beginning, middle, and end with transitions
  • Helps to condence a story within a timeframe

STORYBOARD

Aspect Ration

  • The aspect ratio of your final product, changes the shape of your storyboard
  • Help filmmakers crop their images without looking stretched or shrunk

STORYBOARD

Camera Details & Movements

  • Storyboard can show where the camera angles are, close ups, zoom outs, fade in, & fade out

RULE OF THIRDS

Process of dividing an image into thirds

  • use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye
  • creatively make use of blank space
  • create a conversation between the subject and the background

RULE OF THIRDS

TYPES OF STORYBOARDS

Traditional

Sequence of hand drawn sketches

TYPES OF STORYBOARDS

Thumbnail

  • Loosely drawn
  • Do not need to be detailed
  • Useful for when you already have a strong idea of what you are going to make

TYPES OF STORYBOARDS

Digital Storyboard

  • Ideal for animations that use the same images for the final product
  • Allows customers to have a clear idea of final product

Battle of the Animations

You can continue to post your own artwork in the padlet too

What type of animation do you think this is? What do you like about this animation?

Composition of a Frame

arrangement of background, characters, and objects

You can decide where you want your viewer to look

Elements of a StoryBoard

  • Staging
  • Posing
  • Line of Action

Staging

*What do you think the artist wants us to notice about this shot?
Deciding where to put subjects and parts of your scene in relation to the angle

Poses

Communicates what your character feels, what they are thinking and what action they are in the process of taking or are about to take.

Line of Action

imaginary line that describes the direction and velocity of a character's body

Lighting

  • Color
  • Contrast
  • Intensity
  • Angle

Lighting

Color

  • The color of light affects the color of objects in the frame.
  • Sunlight is more bluish, and white indoor lights will be closer to yellow.

Lighting

Contrast

  • Higher contrast with fewer light sources and no ambient light will make some parts of the scene bright, while others are in the dark shadows, or complete darkness.

Lighting

Intensity

  • A light source's brightness is its intensity. Brighter light will produce harsh edges and shadows.

Lighting

Angle

  • Where you place a light changes the direction and size of shadows.

Audio Effects

  • Voice Over
  • Dialogue
  • Sound Effects
  • Visual Effects

Audio Effects

Voice Over

  • Voice-over is when the narrator's voice is heard, but the narrator is not visible on the screen.
  • In the storyboard, this can be written at the bottom of each shot.
