Metacognitive Comprehension Strategy Example
Strategy: In My Head Definition:This strategy allows students to document what they are thinking in any form that comes natural to them (writing, drawing, writing in their native language etc). It is a preliminary strategy that allows them to gather their thoughts and prepare to articulate those thoughts out loud.

How does this help So Yeong ?
Being that So Yeong is not an advanced English speaker, giving her space to write what she is thinking in her native language( and then translate with the help of a professional) will relieve her of anxiety and allow her to focus solely on what she is thinking. She will be able to document facts she tends to memorize and begin to form the meaning by thinking about what they mean to her. So Yeong can also pull from her bilingual dictionary, and through recognizing cognates and understanding the meaning of the words she is reading, she can document what and how those things make her feel.

Cognitive Comprehension Strategies
Strategies that allow students to make meaning of what they are reading through questioning, taking notes, visualizing, etc.

Cognitive Comprehension Strategy Example
Strategy: Signature Lines Definition: This strategy prompts students to locate significant lines in text and explain their reasoning behind why they think the line is important.

How does this help So Yeong
I believe this strategy will help So Yeong further question why she remembers specific facts and why they are significant. So Yeong will be able to think about what the text actually means to her and how it can be more relevant in real life. She will begin to graduate from simply remembering facts to being able to explain and comprehend their significance.
+ info
Social/affective Comprehension Strategies
Strategies that require peer collaboration, and partnership in questioning text and obtaining clarity.

Social/affective Comprehension Strategy Example
Strategy: Critical QuestioningDefinition: Students create questions as they engage with text. They ask personal questions about their understanding to monitor their comprehension and with peers they ask and answer more critical questions that lead them to understand the author’s purpose of writing the text and/or other abstract meanings.

How does this help So Yeong
Through peer discussion So Yeong is able to practice her articulation and witness live English speaking models, that will enhance her phonemic awareness and phonics skills.
