Teachers' Competencies in Developing Digital Educational Escape Rooms
Yael Hakshurian, Doctoral student Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, Romania
To develop DEERs, teachers need to possess specific competencies that enable them to design interactive and challenging experiences (Rouse, 2017).
Teachers play a crucial role in creating effective DEERs that align with educational goals and promote student engagement (Lopez-Pernas et al., 2021).
Digital Educational Escape Rooms (DEERs) incorporate elements of game-based learning but, use the internet and digital platforms and elements (Makri et al., 2021).
Escape rooms games - participants are locked in a room and must work together to solve puzzles within a set time frame to escape.

Challenges
The shift towards digital platforms in escape rooms in education (DEERs) has presented both challenges and opportunities for teachers:
Problem Statement
Challenges
Lack of skills and knowledge in developing DEERs
Lack of time
Reuse games with less resources
Large group of students can play simultaneously
Ability to play from different locations and different time

What are the digital competencies teachers required to develop DEERs?
What are the key competencies required by teachers to develop DEERs?
Article purpose
The purpose of this article is to identify the competencies essential for teachers to develop DEERs effectively. The following questions were examined:

Competencies in developing DEERs
In this article the key principles and competencies are based on examples of recent research:
Pedagogical principles and content knowledge

Establish learning goals
(Rouse, 2017; Reuter et al., 2020)
Align a storyline that integrates to the subject-matter
(Clarke et al., 2017; Rouse, 2017)
Consider the cognitive abilities of students
(Pornsakulpaisal et al., 2023; Veldkamp et al., 2020)
Establish tasks that contribute to the learning goals
(Pornsakulpaisal et al., 2023)
Pedagogical principles & knowledge
One of the primary challenges is the requirement to possess a deep understanding of pedagogical principles.

(Barajas et al., 2019; Frossard et al., 2015)
Digital Creative Pedagogies (DCP)
DCP involves the use of digital technology to increase creative teaching methods (one way to implement DCP is through the integration of manipulative technologies i.e., using digital figures and puzzles)

(Bressler & Annetta, 2022; Loveless et al., 2006)
Developing prototype and testing
Engaging in an iterative process
Develop challenging puzzles and tasks
Storytelling and designing narrative
Design thinking
Design thinking includes the ability to design narratives, develop puzzles and tasks effectively and enables to adapt the game to the subject matter learned (Bressler & Annetta, 2022; Pornsakulpaisal et al., 2023) .

Digital Technological Proficiency
Multimedia Integration
Digital Content Creation
Data Management
Teacher Digital Competencies (TDC) emphasizes the skills and capabilities required to seamlessly integrate digital resources (Falloon, 2020).
Teacher Digital Competencies
Open communication and collaboration promote the exchange of ideas, feedback, and resources, leading to improved DEERs. Collaboration also encourages practice and by gathering feedback from colleagues, and making necessary corrections teachers improve their DEERs.

Collaboration and teamwork
Teachers may need to work in teams with other educators, subject matter experts, or instructional designers.

Conclusions
Developing DEERs requires teachers to possess a range of competencies and unique knowledge.
With these insights, teachers can leverage the potential of DEERs.
Promoting dedicated training programs for teachers may encourage the adoption of this educational approach of DEERs in teaching.
