Can suggests ability or possibility. In these cases it can be translated as "poder" in spanish.

It's not really used much because it's synonymous with should, but a few examples are worth going over::
She ought to go with her sister = Ella debería ir con su hermana We ought not assume the worst = No deberíamos pensar en lo peor. You ought to be more polite = Deberías ser más amable.
