Comparative Adjectives

Comparative

We use Comparative adjectives to compare two things, people and places. We can also compare in terms of superiority, inferiority and equality

Comparative rules

Two or more syllables adjective

One syllable adjective

Two syllable adjetive

  • Two syllable adjective ending in -e, just add -r ;
  • Two syllable adjective ending in Consonant-y, change the "y" for -ier.
  • We add -er or -r at the end of the adjective;
  • Adjective ending in Consonant + Vowel + Consonant, double the final consonant and add -er.
  • Two or more syllables adjective just use more + adjective.

Irregular adjectives

  1. Good = Better
  2. Bad = Worse
  3. Far = Further

Comparative of Superiority

Two syllable adjective Adjective + than

One syllable adjective Adjective -er + than

Irregular adjective Irregular adjective + than

Two or more syllables adjective More + adjective + than

Comparative of Inferiority

Short and long adjectives: Less + Adjective + than

EE.g. Lisbon is less expensive than London.

Comparative of Equality

Short and long adjectives: (not) As + Adjective + As

E.g.: Regular watches aren't as smart as Apple Watches.

Comparative Adverbs

We use the comparative adverbs to compare two actions.

Comparative of Superiority

One or two syllable adverbs Adverb -er + than

Adverbs ending in -ly More + adverb-ly + than

Irregular adverbs:Well = betterBadly = worse

Irregular adverbs Irregular Adverb + than

Comparative of Inferiority

Less + Adverb + than

E.g.:Nowadays, Hanna studies less frequently than she used to.

Comparative of Equality

To compare two actions we use the same structure: (Not) As + Adverb + As

E.g.: Today it didn't rain as heavily as yesterday.
