What is Culturally Responsive Teaching?

  • Culturally responsive teaching refers to an educational approach that recognizes and values students' cultural backgrounds, experiences, and identities and uses this information to adapt our teaching practices (Will & Najarro, 2022).
  • Culturally Responsive technology refers to developing and using technology tools that integrate and include diverse cultural perspectives in our teaching practices.

Presenter Notes

Culturally responsive Teaching Strategies:

Make Learning Contextual:
Tap into Students' Cultural Capital:
  • Recognize and value the diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, knowledge, and skills that students bring to the classroom.
  • Explore opportunities for students to share and use the skills, knowledge, and strengths they possess within the learning environment (Howard, 2020).
  • Connect lessons and materials to students' environments, interests, and real-life situations (Howard, 2020).
  • Lessons and activities should be relatable so that students can better understand the content by using their prior knowledge and applying their new skills.

02

  • Know your students to modify teaching strategies to meet their needs better.
  • Educators must understand their students' identities, achievements, and perspectives (Walter, 2018).
  • This can include differentiation with assignments and using multimedia resources, visual aids, and sentence frames to help students feel valued, participate, and stay engaged.
  • Create an interdisciplinary unit that will focus on specific cultures and geographic regions to give your students the opportunity to experience and learn about various cultures and people (Nieto & Bode, 2017).
  • Gives students the ability to connect their own experiences to content.
  • Expand the definitions of family.
  • Discuss what a family is, the wants and needs of all families, and the responsibilities and changes within the family (Nieto & Bode, 2017).
  • Offers the chance to raise awareness about the diverse ways in which families are formed.
  • Targeted for various grade ranges.

Available Technology: FlipGrid

Flipgrid is an online video discussion platform that allows educators and students to engage in video-based conversations, discussions, and reflections. This technology is enhanced to help students use their voice, collaborate with peers, and stay engaged.

Presenter Notes

Available Technology: Kahoot

Kahoot is an online learning platform that allows educators to create, share and play learning games, quizzes, and surveys with their students. This technology allows students to interact, participate, retain information, and stay engaged without all the attention on them. This helps target students who are not confident yet in participating in class.

How to Implement

Use digital resources that reflect the cultures of your students. This could be in the form of books, pictures, videos, and websites that represent different cultural perspectives.

  • You can use Flipgrid in the classroom to have students present projects and share their opinions about a topic.

Use technology as an opportunity to get students to collaborate.

  • You can use Padlet for kids to share their opinions, thoughts, ideas, and experiences.
  • Kahoot can be used to get students to work as a team.

Colleague REcommendations

  • Start by understanding your students' cultures and backgrounds.
  • Use technology to provide multiple ways for students to access and learn the content.
  • Incorporate student voice and choice into your teaching (Walter, 2018).
  • Use technology to connect students with their families and communities.
  • As always, be mindful of your own biases and assumptions.
