Located in the Circum-Pacific "ring of fire", Japan is predominantly mountainous - about three-fourths of the national land is mountains - and long mountain ranges form the backbone of the archipelago. The dramatic Japan Alps, studded with 3,000-meter peaks, bisect the central portion of Honshu, the main island.

Eastern Japan has hot and humid summers and cold winters with very heavy snow on the Sea of Japan side and in mountainous areas. Western Japan has very hot and humid summers and moderate cold winters. Okinawa and Amami have a subtropical oceanic climate.

Foxes are widely distributed in Japan, mainly inhabiting forests and rural mountains throughout the country.

Japanese snow monkeys can be found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, with the exclusion of Hokkaido, and live in evergreen broad-leaved forests and deciduous broad-leaved forests.

This Japanese iris is known to ring in good news, hese have three bluish-purple petals and are marked with strips of yellow that sprout from the middle.
