Read aloud. Practice pronunciation.

Biodiversity is the variety of all the living organisms on earth including plants, animals, bacteria and fungi. Earth’s biodiversity is rich, but there are also many species that are in danger of extintion because human activities contribute to habitat loss.

Deforestation is one of the factors that affect biodiversity, but there are ways to preserve habitats by creating spaces with plenty of native plants and water sources.

Deforestation

Urban sprawl (Mérida).

Bees for example, are one species that are in danger because they are losing their natural habitats as more urban areas grow. Bees are important because they pollinate the flowers of the plants that give us our food. More than 90 percent of the bees in the planet are solitary bees and these bees need places to live, just as any other type of bee. We can help these bees with some simple actions:

A bee waterer.

  • Bee hotels are easy to make and they can be placed in gardens or backyards so bees can build their nests.
  • Bees feed from the nectar and pollen of native flowers, so letting the grass grow in our gardens or backyards can help them a lot!
  • Another way we can help solitary bees is by making bee waterers.
