As is very well known, the Cretaceous period came to an end with a mass extinction of the dinosaurs. This extinction was caused by an asteroid impact that sent carbonate and sulfate into the atmosphere causing a long period of ash, dust, and dirt to cloud over the suns rays. This was ultimately the cause of extinction for most of the species that died out.
